Okay guys so you might notice something different about this chapter but if you read the book, The 5th Wave you'd understand what I'm doing ; )
****************************************************************************************************When I was a kid my favorite thing to do was play. Of course who didn't though. I used my imagination, when I still had one and came up with the weirdest shit ever. I'd make a rocket that would reach the moon or a robot with too many hands for it's metal body. And I could keep going all day just because I could. That was my job, to be a kid and in joy the time I had left because sooner or later, I'd have to grow up. We'd all have to grow up at one point and get a job, settle down, and finally raise our own kids. That was the cycle of life. However, when the waves hit we were forced to grow up and pick up a gun. Old enough or not, we had to mature and leave our child life behind. We don't baby kids now or hide them to keep them safe. No, now they keep themselves safe by learning a thing or two about fire arms and combat. It's every man for themselves now because the worlds no daycare.
When my sister was still alive and so were my parents, I still had a little part of me that was still a kid. I was still able to be me. I'm sure everyone still had a little kid in them. But as you know that part of us all went crumbling down into bits and peaces of dust when the others decided to join us, well actually take over us.
The day the others showed up hovering over us was the day things changed forever. Many people left, leaving only a few of us in town. One of my football friends, Logan at the time, had left only a few days after the others showed up. Said something about his family freaking out that it be easier for the other's to get to us first. I asked him if he was scared, he didn't answer for a moment until he said, "Na, this is all just bull, you now? It will pass and then I'll come back and we can keep trying to get that scholarship, am I right?" He said with a smirk but I could see the fear in his eyes. He was unsure and insecure about his answer but I let it slide. I should have been scared too, I was like everyone else but unlike them and Logan, I did believe that this was a faze. That is until the first wave: lights out.
We we're in class at the moment, the teacher as usual teaching. "Who could tell me what x would equal?" and as usual no hands. I honestly didn't want to be there any longer so I raised my hand and she turned to me looking grateful. "Yes Mr. Parish." She was smiling widely by then "May I be excused?" And like that, her smile dropped back down. She looked at edge but then soon her smile returned. "You may, if you could answer this question." she was always a very bright teacher, and she new very well how to get us to work. It took me a while but I manged to figure it out.
"x = √53"
"You may go but hurry, we have more things to go over." She smiled and then continued to ask questions as I left. As soon as I was out of the class I walked to the field by the schools main building were I usually went to. No one was there since class was still on so I sat down on the grass with my back on the buildings wall and went threw my phone. I had gotten a text from some girl in school half an hour ago and 2 from the guys.
Rachel- Hey Benny our date still on Thursday? xoxo
Joshua- Hey, coach called for a meeting after school, see you there.
Marshall- Dude, did you leave Ms.Garrets class to go hook up with Jane? ;)
I shook my head and decided not to answer them and went threw my camera roll to delete photos cause it was at it's max. I scrolled down and clicked each picture to see if it was worth keeping. Some were worthless and other's were memories. I stopped at one particular picture. It was Halloween day, I was planning on going out with some friends later on but my sister insisted I take her out. I really didn't want to, so she complained and gave me many reasons to take her. Then finally I agreed to take her trick or treating. To think that she was only 6 and managed to convince me. we took that picture when we were walking by houses. She wore a ballerina costume with a sparkling tiara. She also manged to convince me to wear a costume as well. I didn't want to disappoint her so I agreed and I dressed up like a pirate. Yup, the hook and everything. She told me she wanted to do this every year with just the two of us, and we planned on dressing up exactly like this every Halloween. But we only managed to do this only one more year because, you know, the other's showed up.
I kept looking at the picture when my phone decided to die on me. I looked at it confused, but I put it away in my back pocket and started to walk back to class. As I walked down the hallway I heard a crash out the window were the main road leading to 27th avenue was. Many cars seemed to turn off all at once, almost by the time my phone did. All the cars had collided together and blocked any exit from the road. A few people walked out their cars but they didn't see what I saw, but I'm sure they heard it. It was a loud piercing noise that seemed to increase. The sound was so deafening that they didn't seem to notice the plain heading right for them. Then finally, it happened. Fire was the outcome of the explosion. Of course why wouldn't it be if a big ass plain happened to fall from the sky and land exactly on the conga line of cars.
I could hear a scream from every classroom. I, myself didn't know what to do. Shocked by what my own eyes had just witnessed about 25 feet away from me. Then the next thing I know there's a man tapping on my shoulder telling me to follow the other students to the schools gym. That's when I noticed the frightened kids moving threw the hallway robotically . Then I became one of them, blending threw the mass of frightened children.
About a week later, things were in complete chaos. Wave two: Surfs up. It started all around the world almost at once. Body's of water surrounded every nation and swallowed up big time industries, so that meant goodbye to the Big Apple of the US. My sister Sissy was now turning 7 in a week but it seemed like I was the only one to remember. I didn't want to remind my parents or her because it wasn't the right timing. I thought, maybe once things got better we could celebrate her birthday but the time was just never right.
Then, when it looked like things couldn't get any worse, fucking birds became our enemy and so the the 3rd wave started: Pestilence. They used mother nature against us, great. Wait, but I'm not even at the good part yet. 2 weeks in the 3rd wave, the universe decided that it be a good idea for me to be one of the lucky fellas to catch on to the red death. Whats even better is that they also decided to kill my family. What luck.
I managed to leave and ended up at a refuge camp after that. And so the 4th wave rolled along and dropped by the silencers. Then some guys found me and promised me revenge. So you see where this is going so why even bother, I'll just keep reminding myself about how much my life sucks.
"Hey Ben, you there?" Flintstone snaps me back from my depressing life story by Clapping his hands together.
"Ugh yeah, what is it?" I say looking at him confused.
"I was telling you that Nugget hasn't been back yet and we're leaving in almost 5 minutes, you think we should go look for him?"
Now that I think about it Nugget hasn't come back in a while. "I'll go look for him," I start to get up from my seat " if we don't get back here in time go without us."
"Got it" he says and continues to play around with Teacup. "Watch them Dumbo" I say pointing at Teacup and Flintstone. I didn't have to worry about Poundcake or Oompa cause they weren't a bother. Then there was Tank but he went to drink water before we leave.
Dumbo gives me a thumbs up and I walk away from the table. The cafeteria wasn't as crowded as it was before so it would be a little easier. Except for the fact that 45% of the kids here were short brown haired boys.
I looked high, low, and still, nothing. He might have gone to the bathroom. I turn to my right and walk forward getting closer to were the entrance is. As I get closer I see someone kneeling on the floor hugging a boy that sits on the floor, Nugget.
I rush towards him and see that's it's a blond girl holding Nugget tightly and even tough her hair is covering most of her face I manage to see a tear slide from her cheek and roll down her face.
I walk in front of them slowing my pace as I approach them. My shoes make a shuffling noise as I do and they turn to me quickly. She looks at me for a second before her eyes widen as Nugget grins widely at me.
"Zombie, look this is my sister" he says looking back at her as she still stares at me shockingly. "I told you she was here."
"Oh, right you mentioned that." like 30 time "Um Nugget we should-"
"Ben" She finally say's in a whisper.
I snap my head at her surprised. She looks very surprised as she pushes herself slowly off the floor. Her hair falls off her face and you could see her blue widened eyes look at me intently.
Wait a minute... She was the one at that party, and she was in my honers class. Catherine, Cassidy, no wait-"Cassie!"
