"Kate....Kate? Kathryn!" Joan, her co-worker at the research lab, was waving her hand in front of my face, snapping her fingers in front of  her eyes, causing Kathryn's head to snap up as she returned to the land of the living, her mind having been a million miles away.

"What is it Joan?" she said tiredly, hand reaching up to brush her temples, the headache she'd been fighting all afternoon coming back to her full force.

"You were off to la-la land again, Kathryn. What's up with you today?"  her colleague questioned as she shook her head, her brown hair bobbing around her shoulder as she quirked her eyebrows at her friend.

"Nothing. Just tired I guess" she said, brushing her dark tresses from her face and looking down at the notes she'd been scribbling down onto a notepad.

"Maybe you should head home early today hun, you look like hell" Joan said with a worried look at the notebook "Those notes are starting to look like Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and I don't feel like having to re-do them tomorrow"

Kathryn let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head in amusement.

"I mean it, go!" Joan said with a shooing gesture with her hands "Go get those two beauties you've got waiting at home and walk it off....or take a nap. Whatever floats your boat"

Kate snorted, shaking her head "You Americans with your silly phrases"

Joan huffed in mock annoyance "Please, pray tell what they'd say back in Mother Russia?"

All Kathryn could do was roll her eyes and stick her tongue out at her friend. They'd worked together for over two and a half years now, and at the Research Lab Joan Daniels  was one of the few people Kathryn liked to think of as her friend.

"Каждому по своему" Kathryn said with a shrug.

"And what the hell is that supposed to mean?" Joan asked, rolling her eyes as she watched her friend started packing up her paperwork and neatly placing her notes in plastic folders, before stuffing them into her laptop bag together with her portable computer.

"To each his own" Kathryn said with a faint smile.

"Well I'm finishing this last round of Premi-tests on the meat samples, and then I'm heading home as well. Max has a birthday and I gotta go pick him up afterwards" Joan said with a yawn. It was almost 7:30 p.m. which was pretty late, but not unusual. With the amount of work they did at the research facility they often pulled long nights and even longer hours.

At 32, Kathryn felt like she had to watch over the younger researcher, despite the fact that Joan was a very capable Microbiologist in her own right. The 26 year old woman was single, but Kathryn knew she had a son, Max, who was about 5 years old. The father had bailed on mother and child when Joan found out she was pregnant, and she hadn't heard from him since. Luckily she had a very supportive family, and Max spent whatever time Joan couldn't watch over him at a Restaurant in downtown Glasgow, owned by Joan's parents.

"Good luck. Tell the little devil I said hi" Kathryn mused with a fond smile. She liked the kid. He was quiet and a bit shy, but once he got to know you and opened up he was one smart kid.

"He's counting the days till he sees those two monsters of you again. He has fallen in love with them, I'm afraid. Keeps insisting he wants one for his birthday" Joan said with a loving smile.

"Please. You love Arkady and Zakhar" Kate huffed with a wink at the pretty brunette.

"Damn right I do! Doesn't make them any smaller though. Those two are like walking mountains" Joan joked.
