I didn't hear from them since we split Saturday. I woke up to my alarm and loomed in bed. I did my usual things to get ready, and kissed my mom goodbye. I strolled through the melting snow, listening to music to keep my mind off things when someone hopped on my back. I stumbled of course, but the one who made me stumble helped me regain my balance.

It was Jacob who was grinning. I smiled back and took out my earbuds to talk to him.

"What's up?"

"Nothing much. My sisters didn't want to get up this morning again and almost missed their bus."

"Aw. How old are they?"

"They're all four. They're gonna be five in March. What about you? When's your birthday? Mine's May 14th."

"My birthday was a couple weeks ago. January 19th."

"I missed your birthday?! If we start dating, I wouldn't be a good boyfriend would I?" His ears drooped.

"Stop saying that! I told you guys, I need to spend time with you guys long enough to develop at least a crush. And if that crush lasts more than four months, then I'll consider!" I blushed. That was always a thing with me. I easily blushed and never knew why.

"What? Four months?" He asked, jumping on a raised sidewalk.

"When you like someone for four months, that's considered a simple crush. If it last longer then that, it's considered love. So even if I like one of you guys, I'd have to wait and see it surpasses five or six months, just to be safe."

"Ah. Hey, Max and I are gonna go play basketball after school, wanna come?" He asked, tugging at his backpack.

I pulled out my phone and dailed my mom's number. "I'll be the guy who keeps score." I said.

"Louis, what is it?" My mom worriedly asked.

"I'm not being followed, kidnapped, raped, or being killed."

"Okay. What's your question?"

"Can I spend some time with a friend after school? It'll only be for an hour or two."

"Sure, but this means you'll have to make dinner tonight." She laughed.

"I know. So, see you later?"

"Mmhm! Make sure to bring a loaf of bread though. We ran out and I just bought one Thursday..."

"Uh, okay, I will. Call you later."

"Okay, bye, I love you Loui."

"I love you too mom. Bye." I hung up and turned to Jacob.

"A yes?"

I nodded. He smiled and looked ahead.

. . .

I looked up from my book. It was going to be lunch in about seven minutes. I returned to reading just before a small rolled up piece of paper bounced off my head and my book. I turned around to see who it was. Mrs. Beaumontie, our English teacher, looked up from the quizzes we had been given earlier.

"Louis? What's wrong?"

"Nothing, just popping my back." I lied, twisting my torso while looking for who threw the paper.
Max looked at me from behind his book, giving me a wink.

"Alright."

After she went back to correcting the papers, I looked at Max, whom motioned me to open the paper. At this point, a few other kids noticed but went back to reading and I went to the paper. I unwrapped it and it said,"Wanna eat lunch together?" I looked back and nodded. The girls I usually sat with were either on a sport trip to a different city or band recital. He smiled and went back to reading.
