Dear Journal,

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. day. Lots of people had come outside in the warm weather to celebrate. Conversations about it were the most thing I heard all day today. Since my family celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. day, my mom made me volunteer at the homeless shelters for the whole entire day! Though, when I got there, I met a few homeless African American people who were really sweet and kind to me. Who I mostly helped was a family of 5, an elderly woman, a mom, 2 girls, and a baby boy. The elderly woman taught me how to knit! It was so cool how I learned really fast and was able to knit a sock! The 2 girls, ages 10 and 13! Same as my age! We talked about random things, such as who is in my family, about ourselves, and what's their favorite hobby. I learned the 10 year old girl is named Ivory and she likes to sing and dance. Then, the 13 year old girl, is named Aaliyah and she likes to run and play sports. They were really the opposite, but I could tell they loved each other dearly. Of course I could talk to the baby, but I was able to make him giggle when I tickled him and played the peek-a-boo game. It was like I was apart of their family or a really close friend for their mom to tell me the secrets about them. For example, the dad had left them for another rich lady and he took all their money, or how they had to travel by foot which were around 20 miles to get here. I was amazed by the end of when they told me and I felt extremely bad for them, going through all that pain. I promised them that I would come visit as much as possible and then left to go home. What an amazing family.
