Jack Request

"I'm so sorry, Kay." Her older sister said, and she helped her zip up the dress.

"I am too." Kay said. She had been looking forward to this day for so long, but it was now filled with dread. She held back tears as her other older sister put on her makeup.

Her mind went back to the day before.

"Jack, I'm breaking up with you." She looked down, too afraid to look into his eyes. "Why?" She heard and looked up at a broken Jack. "I'm getting married. Tomorrow."

His eyes got even more sad. "Why didn't you stop it?" She sighed. "They wouldn't have listened." He pulled her into a hug, but she pushed away. "Goodbye Jack."

A single, wet, tear made its way down her face. The wedding song began, and one of her older brothers took her by the arm. Her father was officiating the proceedings.

She saw her other older brother, three younger brothers, and her younger sister all standing with mournful expressions. They knew about Jack.

Then, she saw him. The man she was supposed to marry. Her heart sunk and she stood by him, holding back tears.

"Dearly beloved..." Her father began and she choked back a sob. She waited, thinking of all of her time spent in secret with Jack. All of her Newsie friends who she would never see again.

"Speak now or forever hold your peace." She heard her father say, and she looked down. "I object." Came a voice. A very familiar voice. She looked up and saw Jack, Racetrack, David, Skittery, Mush, Kid Blink, and a few other newsies.

"What is the meaning of this?!?!" Her mother said, outraged. She smiled. "Jack."

"Kayleigh, I love you. I love you so much, and I can't imagine my life without you in it. I want you to marry me, not this guy. I want you to run away with me. I want you to be my wife. So, yes, I object."

She smiled at him through her tears. Stepping away from the altar, she stepped closer to Jack.

"Jack, ever since I met you, I was hopelessly in love with you. I love sneaking around behind my parents backs, I love the whispers in the middle of the night , I love you. I want to be with you too."

She took his hand, but her father ripped her away from him. "You will not go with this boy. You are staying here, and getting married."

She shook her head violently and backed away from him.

"I love him, daddy, and you can't tell me anything different. I will never be the proper daughter you want, not like my sisters. You never loved me, you were always ashamed of me. Well, let me earn that shame."

She wrapped her arms around Jack and kissed him on the lips. She heard the gasps of horror, and the laughs if the boys. She pulled away and looked at her family.

Her parents were angry and horrified, but her siblings, all eight of them, were grinning with wide grins. She looked at her newsies, and they were all grinning at her.

"Jack, let's go." At that, Jack smiled, took her hand, and ran out the door, all the way to the Newsie lodging house. She collapsed on a bed and looked up at Jack.

"Thank you Jack. You saved me. I almost made the biggest mistake of my life." He sat down by her and put his hands on her face. "I couldn't let you go. It was completely selfish on my part."

She leaned in and pressed her lips against his. Pulling back, she said with a smile, "well, I'm glad you did it anyway."

David came in, but left instantly at the sight of them embracing in her bed. They held each other close, kissing and whispering sweet nothings to each other.

They end up going to Medda's and giving her the dress. Then they go to the lodging house and spend the night together, ending a day a lot happier then it started.
