Linda came bouncing in later full of disgusting giddiness that did nothing but drive me deeper into my bad mood. She sat jauntily in the chair that had previously been occupied by George and perched her elbows on her knees. “So! How was your night with George?” She chirped.
I couldn’t meet her gaze. “Remember Danny, Linda? You know, my boyfriend?”
She was slightly taken aback by my snappiness. “Yeah”
“Then why are you acting this way about George?”
She frowned. “I’m just teasing, there isn’t anything wrong with a little celebrity crush.”
I buried my head in my hands.
No, no more crying.
I did anyway.
Linda leaned forward and touched me on the shoulder. “Oh Donna, I didn’t mean to upset you, please stop crying.” She moved onto the bed and hugged me, careful to avoid my side. I only cried harder.
“I had sex with him.”
Linda pulled back sharply, squeezing my shoulders. She stared back at me, shocked, disapproval written all over her face. “What?”
I nodded, dropping my gaze. I felt so full of shame.
“Donna it’s just a little crush you can’t go around just sleeping with anyone. What about Danny?”
I wiped my face, trying to stem the flow. “I haven’t had a chance to tell him yet.” I whispered. She pulled her hands away, placing them in her lap.
“When did this happen?”
I took a deep breath. “The day after George took me home, he…he came to the diner, and then Danny saw us…and he thought something was going on and- ” My voice cracked, but I regained my composure, staring down at my hands. “He went to hit George, but I got in the way, and then George took me back to his flat for a couple days.” I glanced up at her. “It was only once, and I swear I wasn’t planning on it. It just happened…” I trailed off.
“He hit you?” She asked quietly. I nodded slowly. “It was an accident.” She repeated. Neither of us spoke for a bit.
“So what are you going to do?” She asked. I finally lifted my gaze. “I’m going to tell him, and then hope he forgives me.” I said.
“And what if he doesn’t?”
My lip quivered “I don’t know”
“What about George?”
I fiddled with the bed sheets. “What about him?”
She waved her hands in the air. “Well where does he come to play, what are you going to do about him.”
“Well I-I don’t know.”
“What if Danny doesn’t forgive you?”
I could see what she was saying and shook my head. “I don’t think George is serious about me.”
“But what if he is?”
I looked at her skeptically.
“Oh come on Donna” She said “Don’t be scared of a little change. It’s George Harrison we’re talking about. I don’t think he acts this way to every bird he shags. I think he likes you.” Linda sighed “Do you really want to spend the rest of your life with Danny?”
Honestly, I hadn’t ever thought of spending my life with anyone else besides Danny. Now that another man was in the picture though, I wasn’t sure. Maybe I had only loved Danny because I never had anyone else to love.
