The war is getting rougher day by day, as I sat waiting in a bomb shelter. It was small and fairly lit with 5 lanterns, one in each corner and one above the table in the center. All we had with us to entertain ourselves was a deck of cards, a book, a paper, and a pencil, in the back right the corner of the room was a bathroom. I looked straight at my husband and he was reading a book called "ghost" by johny ringo. He sat in his old rocking chair reading and smiling, devouring a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich and enjoying a cup of milk. At that moment, i thought how thankful i am that i have all my loved ones with me instead of out in the war.

I walked into the bathroom preparing myself to tell my husband the news, when suddenly I heard the door to the shelter open, then close it so long after. As i walked out of the bathroom i saw that there were only 2 people left to occupy the room, my sister and mother. i asked them where Matt had wandered off to. Both stood in complete silence looking down, sorrow covering their faces.

Finally my sister, Caroline, looked up at me and faintly whispered, "He left, without a word. But, I don't think he is coming back." my heart ached as I stood in silence. After a few moments, i ran to the bedroom trying to find anything I could that would let me know where he was going. Anything to know he is coming back to me.

There was a note on the pillow and a little chocolate heart.

'Dear Elizabeth,
I hope you will forgive me for My decision. The war is getting worse and they need help to fight a battle knowing there is a chance i wont return. So I took matter into my own hands and decided I will go out on my own. I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye. It would just be too painful. Please, don't worry yourself, I will be back back. But for now I will be in uniform next to my fellow brothers to fight for my country and win our freedom once more. I love you my beautiful Emily. And I will return for you. And then we will start our family.
Sincerely, Mathew'
