I made my way quietly through the woods to the front line. Wearing my uniform with my head high. Shotgun across my chest as I walked calmly toward General Hearth, trying to imitate soldier I hoped I was capable of being.
"Good evening, General. I have come to fight with my brothers for the freedom and liberty we rightfully deserve. Aware of the cost of being on this line, I will stand against the evil, willing to give my life." I said with a heavy chest. He only nodded.
The trenches were deep, piled with bodies of men fighting for thier next move, and others who weren't so lucky. Gunfire and cannons in every direction.
"MOVE FORWARD." Directed General Hearth, as the soldires poured out of one trench onto the next.
I ran for my life at Generals command. Gunfire slowly faded into a constant, uncomfortably normal ringing filling my ears, as I dove into the trench along my newfound brothers.
General Hearth took a deep breath and stood tall as he yelled through the pit of mud and death, "READY. At my command soldiers! FIRE!" Gunshots and explosions scattered across the field of smoke.
Suddenly, a loud bang screamed from beside me as men fell left and right screaming, gasping for air. Quickly I grabbed my mate, Nathan, as he screamed holding his face, and we ran for cover.
After endless hours of massacre and prayer, the field fell silent. I looked around us as the dust settled. The only light being the mood reflecting off the blood in the mass gravesite I stood centered in. The remaining soldiers went around collecting the injured and carrying them to camp for medical attention, and collecting the tags of the fallen.
I sat on the ground with the men still capable of fighting, staring at a picture of Emily. My love, how I missed her sweet voice. This is all for her. I should have said goodbye. That I would be back for her. But I guess I will just have to make sure I come home to her.
