"Do you know that guy?" Min-Jun asked. His arm went on Hana's shoulder protectively as they left the bar. He had a cigarette on one hand, putting it near Hana's mouth for her to puff.
"He's an old friend," she said. Taking a puff on the cigarette and blowing the smoke up above her head.
"Shit, that guy doesn't carry cash at all. His wallet's all cards." After searching through the wallet and not finding any money, J tossed it at the side.
Hana, knowing it was JB's picked it up secretly and stowed it in her waist, clipping it with the hem of her skirt.
Hana is a part of one of the biggest gangs in Seoul, The Vipers. Min-jun is their leader. Ever since she came to Seoul, five years ago to run away from her abusive step father in their hometown, the gang had been taking care of her. They took her in and helped her find a job.
At first, she thought it would be cool, living with friends and being independent. But, it took a toll on her. Not only did the group force her to steal, they also influenced her to use illegal drugs. They would leave the city when the police is hot on their trail and come back after a month or two.
She's been in and out of jobs because of the gang's activities. She couldn't concentrate on her work, much more earn for her own living.
That night, she was able to get away from the boys. So, she decided to go to a quiet bar for a drink. She so wanted to break free from the gang, but she didn't know how, too. The last member who attempted to withdraw is now in jail, taking all the blame for the group's past crimes.
She felt that she would be more secured inside, but she's getting sick and tired of stealing, drug-dealing, blackmailing and all that shit. She wants a normal life, a decent career, she also wants to go back to school. She wanted out. But how?
She was shocked to see JB in a bar like this. He seemed to be shocked to see her as well.
The transformation she had since the last time they saw each other was completely 180 degrees. She hated drinking before, because her stepfather would always show up drunk at night and hit her or her mom. She abhorred drugs, she knew what it did to people. She's read and watched a lot about people being addicted and going crazy because of it.
When she came to Seoul, she was just 17. She didn't even finish high school. When she became part of the gang, she was required to have their symbol tattooed at the back of her neck. That was her first. She got another one just for fun. She was so stoned that time, she went to a tattoo artist she knew and she had her arm inked at once. She got to dressing sexy, to lure guys for the other members to victimize. She's used to getting what she wants with her looks.
Although she wanted to chat with JB more and give him her number, she was afraid of what Snake's gonna do to him. So she just followed the burly man out.
That night, when she was in bed in one of the rooms they are renting, she thought of JB again. Memories of the past came flooding in.
They used to be together all the time. JB was her hero. He would chase away the bullies that hurt her. She would always run to his house whenever her stepfather would throw a fit. And JB was always welcoming.
She knew that JB had a crush on her, she just ignored it. Besides, he didn't admit it. He was the only person who was there for her. Even her mother didn't care about her anymore. They didn't even try to find her when she ran away.
So, she was heartbroken when JB said he was leaving. Her world fell apart around her. Bullies started pushing her around again. There was nowhere to go when the wicked man kicks her out of the house. She was all alone.
