A soothing and misty atmosphere welcomes me as I wake up with a moan. When I open my eyes, I find myself in a simple white double bed in a room with a wooden floorboards and there is a wall mirror to the right of the bed and a dresser in front of me, next to the door. Am I hallucinating, or worse, captured by the Dark ones? I couldn't have been captured by them, because if I was, I would be dead already. So where the heck am I?
I get myself out of the covers and walk across the room to the mirror on the right side of the bed. I stare carefully at my reflection and see that I am no longer in my dark blue plain T-shirt and my brown shorts. Instead I am wearing a hospital gown and the spot where I injured in the stomach is bandaged. I continue staring in the mirror. This can't be happening. I know I saw a human walking towards me before I blacked out, but what if I was hallucinating? I hit the ground from at least 3 meters from above, so that possibility is high. I go over to the dresser and search it for any of my stuff. No such luck except that I surprisingly found my blue glow stick. While I keep searching, I hear a noise, footsteps approaching the door, I grab the lamp that's on the dresser, stand by the door, ready to strike at any moment. My instincts tell me that the footsteps are getting closer and closer. And they do. As soon as the door opens, I strike a head shot. My target mutters a groan as I realize with a shock that I wasn't hallucinating earlier. My target is a human. Human. A human boy my age.
" Why did you that?"says the boy, rubbing his head.
"Who are you and what do you want?"I reply in an alerting tone.
"I saw you get blown away by an explosion earlier and you collapsed to the ground from 3 meters in the air. You were also pierced with a metal bar in your stomach. I saved you!"he says
"Why did you save me?"I ask
"Because that's what survivors do"
"What's your name?"
"Josh Remington. I'm 14."
" I'm Myra Webb. 15"
"Cool name." he smirks at me.
We stare at each other I little while longer, probably both thinking the same thing: And I thought I was the only survivor left int this world.
"How about we have this conversation downstairs? I made pancakes for breakfast."he says
I follow him down a small corridor when we leave the room and walk downstairs in a small kitchen with a dining table in the middle and two chairs. I sit down while he goes for the pancakes.
"So tell me Josh, where are we?" I ask him carefully.
"Well when I found you in the Dark City, I was out scavenging for useful things. Then I took you and right now we are in Austin. The only place where the Dark ones didn't build any of their cities". he explains
" Austin was my hometown. I didn't know it was left out of the Dark one's list of cities"I say
"I originally come from Philadelphia but I moved in Austin when I was two. This is my house"
"How long have I been unconscious?" I say, changing the subject.
"Like about five days."
Five days? I can't believe it. Five days without looking for Mitchell. I just hope he is okay.
Josh comes over to the table with pancakes and sits down. We both eat in silence for a while until I he starts talking again.
" Myra, where do you live? I mean where's your safe house?he asks.
"I have lived outside in the Nevada desert in an abandoned spaceship with my robot companion, Mitchell for the past 5 years." I say. I decide to be honest with him on this one. It doesn't matter anyway.
