LILY
The next morning I wake up in a strange bed. I start to panic but then the memories of the night before fill my mind. I'm not in a strange bed; I'm in one of Gavin's beds. My head is still trying to wrap around all the things that happened in the last two days. First I lost my job, then I lost the only place I can call a home and then my life changed completely when Gavin found me lying on that bench, which by the way was pretty embarrassing. The moment I saw his house last night I knew that Gavin wasn't your ordinary man. He was obviously very successful in what he did for a living. His house is really wonderful and I'm thankful that it was him who found me and not some bum trying to steal my belongings. He was really amazing when he offered me a place to stay, but I can't help but feeling as if I'm constantly going to be a bother to him.
Shaking the feeling of worry, I push the covers off of my body. Gavin told me where everything was so I just grab a towel and make my way toward the bathroom attached to the bedroom. The bathroom is much bigger than the bathroom in my previous apartment. There is a huge tub in the corner of the room. The shower has two shower heads and there is a long bench stuck to the underside of one of the walls. I decide to opt for the latter. The water flows smoothly down my body as I wash myself. Gavin's soap that he had in the bathroom smelled like coconuts. Coconut scent fills the air around me, making me feel like I'm floating on a cloud. After I wash my hair and body completely I get out and dry myself off.
I decide to wear my light blue jean shorts and my white tank top. The house is fairly quiet and I wonder where Gavin is. He did say that he had to go into work a lot so he won't be here that much. Gavin showed me where the kitchen was last night so I knew where to find food. I walk down the stairs and into the kitchen. A short, chubby woman is in the kitchen when I walk in. She doesn't notice me because she's too busy singing along a song in Spanish. This must be Gavin's mother. Gavin's mom is in front of the stove, cooking something that smells really good. I tap on her shoulder. She swings around and holds up a spatula in my face.
"Hi. Sorry if I frightened you." I chuckle at the expression on her face.
She relaxes and flash me a toothy grin.
"Are you Lily Jones?"
"Yes, I am."
A big smile grows on her face and she rushes forward to give me a hug. "You are even prettier than I pictured. Come let me get you something to eat. My name is Miriam." She ushers me to sit at the table in the middle of the room. Once I'm seated she places a plate full of delicious looking goods in front of me and rushes back to the stove to turn off the burner. She pulls out a chair and sits across from me. "So, tell me something about yourself."
"I'm twenty three years old. I lived with my gran for a few years but then she got too sick and had to go to a nursing home. Her house was put in the market and I had to find a new place to live. I got a great deal on this apartment and even though it weren't that much - I still called it home, but yesterday my landlord - Bernie - told me that I had fallen behind on my bills so he kicked me out of the apartment. I walked around the streets for a while; I got to this bus bench and decided to sleep there for the night. I had just gotten comfortable, or as comfortable as I could, when Gavin found me. That is how I got here." I take a deep breath and take the chance to look at Gavin's mom. She doesn't look anything like him but she's still really pretty. I expected to see a look of disgust and disappointment in her eyes but all I saw were love and adoration.
"I'm sorry that you had such a tough life, honey. I'm glad that Gavin could help you when you needed the help."
"Thank you for letting me into your lovely home. It's really nice to know that I have somewhere to go - even if it is just for a few days."
"My lovely home?" she looks at me questionably.
"Yes. You are a really great mother to let your son bring a total stranger into your house. I'm truly grateful to the both of you."
Her laughter makes me wonder what I said wrong. She wipes the tears that formed in the corners of her eyes away and looks at me with a twinkle in her eyes. "Oh no, honey, I'm not Gavin's mother. I work for him. I cook and clean for him when he can't get a minute away from work." She leans towards me and motions for me to move closer too. "Gavin calls me his second mother - sometimes even his roommate, but between you and me, he should actually call me his maid. Even though that is what you call a person in my working situation, Gavin insist that I never use that word around his house. He scolded me once when he heard me saying that about myself. I try to get it through that thick scull of his that I don't mind, but he won't accept it." I laugh loudly along with her until I have to hold my tummy.
The rest of the morning goes by in a flash. I help Miriam around the house most of the day. After she assured me that she would manage, I walked down to the lake. I walk across the deck and sit down at the edge of it. The cold water touches my toes as my legs dangle off the edge of the deck. A couple of fishes scurry away - afraid of being caught. The sun is kissing my skin lightly and I lean back to catch more of it. It's so peaceful here. I wonder if Gavin has any neighbors. It would be nice to meet someone new while I stay here. I hasn't notice any other houses on the way to the house, but then again I was practically asleep for most of the ride. When Gavin comes home I'll have to ask him about it.
"It's beautiful right?"
I turn my head to the person who interrupted my observation. The grayest eyes I had ever seen stares back at me. The man smiles at me and my heartbeat quickens. I make a move to stand up but he quickly motions for me to stay seated before he takes of his shoes and rolls up his slacks. He takes a seat next to me. We sit there side by side, looking out to the water. After a minute of silence I turn to him to find him staring at me with curiosity.
"Hi. I'm Lily." I hold my hand out to him and wait for him to shake it.
"Hello, Lily. My name is Daniel but everyone calls me Danny." I smile at him and we fall into a comfortable silence. "I must say, I know everyone in this area, but I don't believe I have seen you before."
Something in the back of my mind tells me that I had seen him before. I rack through my brain, trying to figure out where I've seen him before. I look at him again and the answer hits me like a bucket of cold water.
"Why are you lying?" his eyes grows to saucers.
"What are you talking about? I'm not lying. I've never seen you before in my life."
My irritation turns to red hot rage. I stand up and wait for him to do the same. When he is standing in front of me I jab my finger in his chest. "You were at that table yesterday. You and a bunch of other guys laughed in my direction when your dear friend - Gavin - made me spill my drink all over my notepad." He looks at me as if had gone mental. That look makes me even angrier. When Danny doesn't answer me, I do the funniest thing ever. I push him into the lake.
A deep laugh timbers through the air and I look behind me to see Gavin walking towards us. My mouth goes dry and I forget how to breathe. He's dressed in a black suit and a blue dress shirt underneath. He walks gracefully over to where I stand. My eyes are drawn to the muscles bulging under his suit's fabric. He comes to a stop next to me and laugh at Danny splashing in the water. Miriam rushes from the house with a towel in her arm. When she reaches me I grab the towel and thank her. She nods and quickly turns back to the house, but not before I see the smirk sitting on her lips.
"Stop laughing you idiot and help me out of the water." Gavin helps Danny out of the water. I rush to Danny's side and offer him the towel. He takes the towel and glare at me, but thinks better of it to say anything. Meanwhile Gavin tries - but fails miserably - not to laugh at a very wet Danny. Danny's hair sticks to his forehead. His beautiful blue suit is plastered to his body and he is dripping all over the deck. Before I can stop myself, a bark of laughter escapes me. Gavin too gives up on holding his laugh at bay and joins me.
"Lily, I see that you've met Danny."
"Oh, I met him alright." I shoot a glare in Danny's direction. He immediately shrinks on the spot. This reminds me of a boy getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Gavin's gaze shift between me and Danny and I can tell that he's curious to know what had happened between me and Danny. The two men stare at each other, making gestures with their eyes and I take that as my queue to leave. I walk back to house and help Miriam prepare dinner.
