I kept running until I came to the gazebo the Professor had place on the cliff. I was so scared. I could have just killed Gambit. The one who knows me best and would risk his life for me. I sat down against the metal railing and began to cry. The wind blew softly off the ocean. I looked up and noticed a tall, man standing in front of me, looking out at the ocean. I was startled and quickly stood up. I pulled my glove off and got ready for any kind of attack.
"There is no need to fight, Rogue," the man said. "That is not why I'm here."
"Then why are you here?" I asked, startled by his words. "What do you want?"
The man laughed and said, "Why, I'm only here to offer you a way out."
"A way out of what?" I asked, growing impatient.
"From your powers," he said. "I have come to relieve you of the pain. You dislike your powers, not being able to get close to anyone without hurting them."
I stared at him in disbelief. Could he really get rid of my powers?
"Here's my deal," the man said, turning around. "I will get rid of your powers and memories of them. This included every person you have ever absorbed in your entire life."
I couldn't believe it. This man was offering the one thing I wanted most in my life.
"You mean," I said quietly. "I would be, normal?"
The man laughed and relied, "Of course. Your life would return to the way it used to be."
I thought for a moment. Could this really be happening? I looked at the man and asked what his name was.
He simply replied by saying, "Sinister."
I turned away from him to think. Should I trust this man? I thought. I turned back to where he was, but saw was not there. Suddenly, I heard his voice.
"I'll let you decide," he said. "No need to rush. But if you want to take my offer, then meet me at the abandoned warehouse after sunset tomorrow."
I heard him laugh and then there was silence. I was left alone to think about his offer. Should I do it? If I do, I will have my life back, but then I would not remember the X-men. Or Gambit. But if I don't, then I would never be able to get close to someone without hurting them. I thought some more, before my brother popped up out of nowhere.
"There you are, Rogue," he exclaimed. "We have been looking everywhere for you."
"Why?" I asked, concerned. "Is something wrong?"
"No," Kurt said. "We were just worried about you."
I smiled at the thought of everyone's concern for me. They all cared about me. Kurt took my gloved hand and 'ported us back to the Institute. Kurt exclaimed that I had been found and there was no need to worried. Everyone was tired, so we all decided to go to bed.
I went to my room and got dressed, and climbed into bed. I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep, but I found myself tossing and turning. The only thing on my mind was what Sinister had said to me. He could take away my powers and I would be normal.
I finally was able to shut my eyes and fall asleep. But I was haunted by a dream. I dreamt that every person I ever absorbed in my life were out to get me. I ran through the streets only to be stopped by more people. They began to circle around me, closing in. Getting closer and closer.
I felt a hand shake my shoulder and I sat up from my bed. I looked around and saw Gambit looking at me.
"You alright, Cher?" he asked kindly.
"I'm fine, Gambit," I replied, holding my head. "Just a bad dream."
"I could tell," he said. "I walked pass your room and heard noises coming from inside. When I peeked in, I saw you were struggling, like you were fighting someone off."
"I'll be fine, Gambit," I said, smiling. "You feeling better already?"
Gambit nodded and explained he was just going to his room to get some sleep. He smiled at me and left the room. I watched him until he was out of sight, then went back to bed.
The rest of the night, I slept peacefully. I went to the kitchen for breakfast and could not stop thinking about my dream from last night. When I was finished eating breakfast, I decided to go and change and get some fresh air.
I sat on the edge of the fountain in the front yard. I began to think about the offer Sinister made to me the night before. Just then, Logan called me in for a train session to help control my new gift. I stood up and walked inside. I changed into my uniform and phased through the floor until I reached the danger room.
When Logan began the course, he started it out easy. Then as time went on, it got harder. I was able to dodge most of the objects thrown at me, but some I nearly was hit by. Logan stopped the session after about an hour and congratulated me.
"You really are learning to control your claws, Rogue," he said.
I smiled at him and went to change. By now, it was time for dinner and we had a wonderful meal. I looked out the window and noticed that the sun was beginning to set.
"Meet me at the abandoned warehouse after sunset," Sinister had said.
I excused myself from the table, skipping dessert of strawberry shortcake. I was running to my room, when I saw Gambit in his room playing with his cards. I stood there a moment before I kept running to my room. When I got there, I shut the door behind me.
I sat at my desk and pulled out a pencil and a piece of paper. I began to write a note to Gambit.
Dear Gambit,
I am writing this letter to you because I know you care about me. You will never hear from me again, so I am saying goodbye. I am going to the abandoned warehouse tonight, but do not come after me. Do not tell anyone where I am, for they will only worry about me. Dispose of the note in your own special way. I will miss you, Gambit. Farewell.
