"Shh!" I spat to a boy chatting freely beside me. I turned back to the projector at the front of the room and pushed up my large, wire frame glasses. I have thin, long, blonde and brown hair. My pale skin and freckles go neatly with my role as the "nerdy girl", even though no one sees me that way. I've always been an athlete, hopefully one to be remembered. Not that I'm not smart, but definitely not a nerd. Dresses and skirts aren't my favorite thing to wear, even though they are a relatively common outfit of mine. My favorite outfit is a good pair of blue skinny jeans and boots with some sweater or tank top depending on the weather.

Once I can focus back on our history video of people fighting in WWII, I am interrupted by the boy gabbing about me to his friend. Clearly, he is unaware I can hear him for, he is trying to be subtle. All of a sudden, my head snaps to the bell as it rings signaling that school is over. My class files out and the boy pushes past me in attempt to get to the door first. It's a cloudy Monday afternoon, but a warm one. On my way to my locker, I see Marcell, Marcy for short. She is my best friend- the only one who stands up for me. She is walking with Zack, my boyfriend. I'm so lucky to have the two of them, even if they aren't the only friends I have. I catch up to them, plans of hanging out arranging in my head. "Hey guys!" I happily skip over to the both of them.
"Hi..." Marcy drifts off. She is looking at something past me and as I turn my head to see it, she quickly springs to life. "OH hey you!"
"Babe." Zack bites his lip, smiling. "I'm happy to see you." He can barely hold back his apparent excitement. He grabs my hips and spins me around so I'm facing away from him. His arms wrap around my waist and he nuzzles my neck. I giggle because of how much it tickles.
"Ew, not my scene!" Marcy chuckles.
"Oh wait! I was wondering if you guys wanted to hang out today? Maple is out and I need someone to chill with." I say, hopefully convincing her to walk with me home so I wasn't alone. I haven't felt safe on the streets lately.
"Sorry, I can't tonight I have cheer." She sunk into her shoulders. "Maybe tomorrow. I have to go now. Bye! I love you!" She cheers as she trots down the hallway.
"I'm free..." Zack all of a sudden speaks up.

"Babe, you know you can't come over when my aunt isn't home." I sigh.

"I know but, we've broken rules before..." He drags out, slowly. "Sorry.. I love you." I kiss him, carrying the kiss out longer than I expected before breaking our embrace and running to the main school doors.

Upon exiting, I see lots of people surrounding the school. If they hate it here so much, why stick around? I wonder, as I quicken my pace. I'm hoping that I can leave the school yard and get away I think right as she pipes up from behind me. "Hey guys! It's Cadence!" Halley Mason. She noticed me right away. Halley is Widesworth High's #1 bitch. She is popular and snotty and too rich for her own good. She had been my best friend for so long until she moved away to Minnifeld Academy. When she came back, she had new clothes, new friends and became a whole new person. No longer was this the Halley I Mason I once knew. She had always been rich, always looked down on most people, but would never even think about saying something about it, or causing a scene.
"Hey brat." She tugged lightly on a chunk of my hair.
"Hi." I said firmly. Fuck. I'm alone and I am in the presence of Halley and her entourage. One of her friend patted their chewed up gum in the piece of hair Halley had pulled on. Snickering, another one of them pushed the gum deeper into my hair and pushed me over with it. I stepped sideways and caught myself before completely falling off of the sidewalk. "Oh, I wanted to tell you... Stop being such a stupid whore." Halley spit venom with every word she spoke. "You and your loser boyfriend should chill out in the hall." I collected myself and started to walk away. "Halley," I called back, I calmly gave her my favorite finger. Her friends started to laugh at her, and she stood there with a gasp expression on her face, mouth gaping open. "You're going to catch flies if you stand there like that. She was horrified. Halley stuck her nose in the air, closed her mouth and walked off, stomping her feet like a 6 year old who didn't get her way.

I shuffled home, the wind making the air seem cold. I hear stirring leaves around the streets and someone yelling in a house behind me. I walk down the driveway to my house and I'm almost back to the one place I can relax... As soon as I get this gum out of my hair.
