"What do you mean 'expecting'?" I picked up my phone off the ground and sat up straighter, intent on listening some more. Remi growled as she lied down and curled up next to my feet. I hushed her involuntarily and petted her neck.
"I mean exactly that." Dr. Riley sat down in the chair next to me. "She's carrying about five puppies with her." Of course this was a lot to take in, so I stood up and put my hands on my head. How could Remi be pregnant? I paced back and forth, and Remi gave me a look as if she would say 'Who cares, it's just puppies.".
"Ryker.." I whispered it under my breath, knowing that the blue heeler had something to do with it. I turned to the Vet that was still sitting down. "Well thank you, Dr. Riley. Your help was much appreciated. But," I walked to the door, and Remi stood up to follow me. The veterinarian also stood up and opened the stall door for us, and held it there as we walked out. Remi snarled at him when he reached down to pet her back, and I had a hard time not giggling. Then I nodded my thanks to him. "But I have got to go. Remi will be in great hands, along with those puppies." I turned and smiled my goodbye to him, hoping I wouldn't have to come back here again.
"Marley wait!" I turned around, hearing my name. The vet held out a baggie with a pill bottle and tube inside of it. "This is Remington's medication. Apply the ointment twice a day, morning and night. And one pill at dinner. Okay?"
"Okay, have a nice day!" I took the bag and smiled. He smiled back and that was the end of that.
I stopped at the front desk and explained to the lady there that I had a check from my grandfather that would have to work. It took us about twenty minutes to figure it all out and eventually we walked out with everything payed for. Remi followed me close on my heels as I walked out of the door and towards the truck. The cow with the scar was gone, and there was a new trailer outside. A person walked out of it practically dragging a young horse who didn't want to come out. I shook my head and continued walking towards my truck. I jumped inside and reached over to open the other door. Once it swung open, the chubby white and black dog jumped up onto the seat. I shut it behind her and put the baggie in between us on the middle seat. The truck shuddered again as I started it and drove it out of the parking lot, making sure to go around the wild horse and its trailer.
I looked over at Remi, who had her nose to the window, looking outside the truck as we drove. I smiled and spoke over towards the dog, which made her ears stick up.
"Pregnant huh?" Remi turned and looked at me. Her ears went to the side and she lied down. "Don't be upset about it, that's exciting, Remi!" My voice perked up in volume and she sat up, her tail wagging back and forth slowly. I reached my hand over and patted her side, then my hand went back to the wheel. I reached over and grabbed the stick shift and my foot went to the clutch while a wicked smile spread across my face. I upshifted to fourth gear and the truck sped down the dirt highway after skidding a little bit, leaving tracks in the dirt road and a dust storm behind us. I rolled my window down and took my hair out of its ponytail and let it fly. Remi looked terrified, and it just made me laugh.
I got home quicker because of my little speed race by myself. The truck downshifted and rolled the truck into the driveway, and saw nobody in sight. I parked the truck and let myself out, leaving the door open for Remi. She jumped out and ran off again, probably in search for Ryker. I sighed and grabbed the keys and went in search for my grandparents, hoping that I would have something else to do. I found them by the corral, Grandma was inside holding two large horses by neon blue ropes that connected to matching halters. I recognised the one on the right has Hustler, the horse I rode yesterday. I walked up to them and patted the horse's side. His back leg on my side kicked out behind him and it made me jump, because it barely missed me.
