To Fly

I sat beside you,

Watched you breathe

Holding your hand,

Waiting for you

To come back to me.

Each flutter of

Your beautiful eyes

Giving me new hope.

But then the sky

Stole you from me.

You spread your wings

And flew away,

Into the stars

Without so much

As a wave

Goodbye.

Your body was

Taken by the earth.

Ashes to ashes...

Your smile,

Your laugh,

Your love,

Extinguished.

Dust to dust.

They told me,

Your love would

Live on.

They told me,

You would watch me

From a better place.

But earth is no heaven

Without you.

I visit you still.

Plant flowers in spring,

Talk softly in summer,

Clear leaves in autumn,

Light candles in winter.

Wait to join you,

To be by your side,

Always.

They told me

To move on.

But I don't know

How to feel anything

Except this void.

Slowly swallowing me,

Erasing me.

Silently fading.

At night I sit.

Memories and tears,

In the darkness.

I reach out,

But the sky

Will not take me.

My wings

Will not grow.

The moon's glow,

Lights my path

As I climb.

It dances over

The crashing waves,

As I stand.

But I am oblivious,

As I fall.

And in that moment,

In my last breath,

The wind catches

In my wings.

I close my eyes,

And finally

I know what it is

To fly.
