"Connie!" Jacob ran after her through the department but she was already gone. He watched as she drove away no idea where she was going.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she drove through the streets of Holby only one destination in mind. She stopped the car and let her head fall forwards against the steering wheel as she continued to cry. She'd just walked away from the man who was going to ask her to marry him.
"Jacob?" Zoe ran outside stopping beside Jacob who threw his fist into the wall. "Woah, stop before you hurt yourself. Jacob!" Grace came outside to see the two standing by the wall. "Jacob, what's going on?"
Her voice was the only thing he paid any attention to. He turned to face her dropping down to the floor forcing a smile. "Where'd Mum go?" Jacob didn't want to lie to her. "I don't know, but she'll probably be back soon so why don't we go get your stuff and head home?"
Grace smiled going inside while Zoe looked at him. "Do you want to tell me what's going on-" "Not really Zoe... I just want to take Grace home-" "Not before I've checked your hand, you could have broken something."
Connie sat in the car before wiping the makeup from her face and getting out of the car. She walked up to the door and knocked as a small blonde woman opened it not wearing much.
"Sorry, I didn't realise anyone was here." "It's okay let me just get him, Sam someone's here to see you." When he appeared at the door he looked at Connie who just shook her head. "Sophie go back inside..."
"Save it Sam, you've always been full of shit. I didn't come here for you anyway..." She turned and walked down the steps as Sam grabbed a coat and some keys from the wall before shutting the door and heading after her.
"Con why'd you come-" "Because I needed to tell you why that happened but I guess it doesn't matter." Sam caught up to her and grabbed her wrist. "I know why it happened... We both still love each other-" "You really don't get it do you!?"
"I don't love you-" "Right... So you kiss everyone do you?" Connie wanted to sit down and talk but that was impossible now. "I was pregnant before. When I was admitted to hospital and you weren't there because you were too busy with someone else. Yeah I lost it funnily enough, I thought you deserved to know but obviously you had other things in your head."
Sam stood to the spot watching her. "I felt bad about lying to you, part of my thinking somehow I owed it to you to try with you... God how wrong was I!?" "Connie-" "No. I'm glad this happened today! Yeah, sometimes it takes something this horrific to realise how stupid you can be and what's important to you and it sure as hell ain't you."
Connie opened the car door and went to get in. "Don't bother coming over for Grace, if she wants to see you I'll call you." She slammed it shut and drove off before anything else was said.
Jacob sat on the sofa with Grace curled into his side. He clenched his hand wincing in pain before Grace sat up. "Is Mum annoyed with us-" "No sweet heart, she just had a rough day." Grace nodded resting her head down again.
Another hour passed and Grace had disappeared upstairs for a bit while Jacob sat on the sofa doing nothing. He pulled a box out of his pocket and looked down at it. He flicked it open to reveal a silver diamond ring, nothing much but he thought she'd like it.
"Is it too late to give you an answer on that?" Jacob's head shot round to look at her. He hadn't even heard the door but she stood with her keys in her hands fiddling with them.
Connie swallowed before wandering further into the room and sitting down beside him. "I think I owe you some kind of explanation-" "You don't owe me anything..." He spoke coldly but couldn't completely shut off his emotions for her.
Her eyes fell to his hand and she grabbed hold of it. "What did you do? Was this because of me..." He didn't say anything but he didn't need to. "I'm so sorry." Her voice was croaky as she tried holding back the tears.
"Jacob I shouldn't have reacted how I did-" "It's fine I should never have said anything." Connie realised in that moment that she'd lost him, lost the best thing that had ever happened to her.
"I- I- I..." Connie couldn't form anything. She didn't know how to speak to him now. "Why'd you run?" Tears rolled down her cheeks as he looked up at her. "I love you, I know you love me too but why?"
"Because I was scared. Scared that someone could love me so much that they'd stay by my side after the things I've done. Scared that someone would want to spend the rest of their life with me. Scared that if I said yes, I'd let you down and lose you anyway. Scared that I wouldn't be enough for you."
Jacob moved closer his hand going to her cheek. "Look at me. You will ALWAYS be enough for me. Don't ever think otherwise." Tears poured down her cheeks as he looked at her. "Do I look like someone who's about to abandon you? I'm no Sam when will you realise that?" Connie cried as he pulled her into his chest.
Grace sat on the stairs listening to everything that they said to each other. She had been about to walk in but heard her Mum's voice and knew it was best to let them talk.
"I want to know you're always safe and I want to be the one to protect you and Grace-" "I want you to be too but-" "But nothing. I love you that's all there is to it." Connie sat up looking at Jacob who shifted from the sofa.
He knelt down on one knee before her. "You have always been the one I wanted to go home to. You have always been the most beautiful girl in my life. You have always been the one I love and always will be. Will you marry me Connie?" She nodded her head as the tears kept falling down her cheek.
Grace couldn't see what was going on and panicked when her Mum didn't say anything.
"You're an idiot Connie Beauchamp." She laughed after he slid the ring onto her finger and wrapped his arms around her. "I love you so much." Connie wrapped her arms around his neck before Grace stepped into the room smiling.
"Come here!" Grace ran over causing Jacob to look down as she hugged her Mum. "I love you Grace so so much-" "I love you too Mum." Jacob smiled before kissing Connie.
"You said yes didn't you?" Connie laughed down at her daughter nodding. "Yes I did-" "So you're like really my step-dad now?" Jacob grinned as he picked Grace up. "Nah I don't think so... They're all boring-" "Not all of them, because you're not." Grace hugged Jacob as he sat beside Connie on the sofa wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "I love you both don't forget that."
