[Jared]
I felt the pressure on my pinky as she wound her pinky with mine. I looked up to see her, like, actually SEE her. I came to realise how cute she looked, with the sun shining behind her, which kinda seemed like it was lighting up her dark hair. She smiled at me, creating the cutest pair of dimples I’ve ever seen. Her eyes practically lit up when she did smile, and it looked so much better when she was always frowning. I caught myself gawking, and to be honest, which guy wouldn’t?
I felt a tug on my hand, and I snapped back into reality. “Uh, hey, Jared.. You gonna let go, or what?” Kristen was pulling on my pinky. I quickly withdrew my hand and shoved them into the pocket of my kakis. They were all sweaty, and I silently prayed that she didn’t notice. “Here, there’s a bench on the far side, we can have a seat there, it’s much more easier to talk there.” Kristen nodded as she picked up her shoes and began to tread through the grassy path that I made going to the bench all the time. She sat down, and I mimicked, minus the part when my school books had to be put down.
I coughed. “So... Uh. How’s everything going? Y-you know, with the school and all...” I sounded like a complete retard, and tried desperately to remember all the tips I had stayed up all night to rummage up. But. Nothing came to my memory. So I waited for her to answer me while I fiddled the straps on my bag.
“Nothing much... Just trying to catch up on all the stuff I’ve missed this year. Did you guys know that half of the stuff you do here, they don’t teach back at my old school? It’s funny too, you guys have so less homework... I swear, I was just sitting at home the entire week reviewing. Well... I guess I had a day off yesterday.” I nodded along, it was nice to see her actually so talkative. People probably thought she was mute before they actually got to know her.
“Right... Yesterday....” She still hasn’t told me why she looked like total crap earlier, ignore my lack of word choice.
She rolled her shoulders back, and sunk deeper into the bench. “Well, my one hell of a stepmother ended setting me up with a job as a maid.” She paused for dramatic effect. “I worked as a maid for... Brandon. Aaand... I might have probably, mayyyybe had my first taste of alcohol.” She fiddled with a loose thread on her shirt. I could tell she still wasn’t comfortable to tell me everything, but that only made me more determined to get her to open up to me more.
I nodded, and decided to make the moment easier. “So. Did you enjoy it??” I smiled, just to show her that I was kidding. Kristen smiled back. “It was alright, but I’ll probably never drink in my entire life again. Hangovers are total bitches.”
I laughed at her easy use of language, I liked that about her. Prissy girls really weren’t my type anyways. Man, if this keeps up, this bet is totally in my hands. I cringed at the thought of the bet, it was like Brandon to come up with something like that. I know that Kristen’s gonna find out sooner or later, and she’s gonna be so broken, and I won’t be there to help her. That’s what’s gonna suck the most.
Just then, the last bell rang, and Kristen started to get up. I was desperate to stay in her company. “S-so... This was fun... I hope?”
“Yeah, definitely. I’m going to need that secret super brain of yours if I’m going to pass math and science. You’re going to help me, right??” She looked hopeful, and there wasn’t any chance I was going to crush that look. “Sure, if you want to meet up tomorrow.”
Kristen smiled and made her way down the staircase and the door. Her smile was still engraved in my mind, how her smile doesn’t really reach her eyes, but it was kinda... knowing. It was fresh, mysterious... And so different from anyone else’s. I liked it, a lot, needless to say. I stayed behind and watched as she left. The wind blew, and it was somewhat cold, and lonely...
I knew that feeling. I just didn’t want to admit it. I liked Kristen, and somewhere deep down, I hoped that she would like me too.
