RUZEK'S POV

I was on stand by with Kevin and Kim. Voight and Erin went inside the clothing store, while Jay and Sydney entered the playground.

Kim lightly tapped my shoulder. "Can I talk to you?"

"Yeah, sure."

She pulled my arm and brought me over to her squad car. "Ok, we need to discuss this. You know, the whole wedding thing. I know I called it off-"

"And you want to call it back on?"

"Maybe. I realized that I overreacted about the whole thing. But, I just felt like I wasn't important enough to you."

"What?" I laughed in disbelief.

"You just seemed to-"

"Hey! Chicago Police! Stop!" I looked in the direction that the yelling came from and saw Kevin chasing Francis Slate.

Kim nodded her head at him. "Come on."

We both sprinted and tried to catch up with him. Slate stopped for a second and thought about where to go next. He turned right and knocked over a couple of trash cans.

Finally, I caught up to Kevin and closed in on the guy.

"We're never going to catch him, man," Kevin panted.

"Oh yes we will." I whipped out my gun.

"Good thinking."

I aimed it right at his left leg. I knew Voight wouldn't want him dead. This man had some questions to answer. When I felt like I had a good shot, I pulled the trigger. The familiar loud bang went off and the criminal fell to the ground with a cry.

Kevin took out his handcuffs and vigorously flipped Slate on his stomach. "You're under arrest for juvenile sexual assault, kidnapping, attempted rape, battery, and vandalism."

"Vandalism?" I whispered.

"He knocked those trash cans down a minute ago."

"Oh, right..." The longer Slate was in prison, the better it would be for everyone.

Just as we were dragging him back to the car, a loud explosion went off on the street we were previously on.

"Isn't that where the clothing store and playground is?" Kim asked.

"God, not today," I moaned as I ran to see what had happened.

SYDNEY'S POV

My ears were ringing and my head was pounding. I opened my eyes and found myself lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Is that my own blood?

I looked to my left and found a body slumped over against the car. I moved closer to it. The pain finally set in as I moved my arms to lift myself up. I winced some as I remembered that Jay was stabbed with a metal shard.

"Hey, Jay, can you hear me?" I shook his body a little to see if he was awake. "Halstead," I tried again.

After realizing that he was totally unconscious, I slowly moved to his other side to help him. I rolled him over so he was laying on his back.

"Morell! Halstead!" It was Voight. I turned around some and saw him running over to us. "I've got an ambulance on the way."

I glanced at the pretty-good-sized shard of metal sticking out of my partner's side. "We don't have time, sir. He'll bleed out." From the looks of it, the shard impaled his liver. Blood was seeping out around the piece of metal which told me that an organ with a major blood supply had been hit.
