Between the yelling and the loud wailing of the sirens in the background, the moment was absolutely chaotic.
Voight flew his arm around in every direction possible, telling police officers were to search.
"I want my team to stay here and wait."
"Why?" Erin asked. "We can help search."
"Because the arsonist might be a victim inside."
She nodded her head and looked around the building.
I waved Jay over furiously.
He raised his eyebrows and held out his arms as if to ask,"What?"
"Stop chatting with your brother, who let me remind you has a completely different job than you, and help me over here."
"God, why are you in a mood?"
"Because you know what happens when you ignore Voight. Just trying to save you. Plus," I punched him in the arm. "You should be with your partner at all times in a moment like this."
He grinned and laughed at me. "Alright. Whatever."
"We got somethin' over here!" One cop shouted in the distance.
My unit walked in that direction, shining our flashlights on the ground to see where we were going.
"What is it?" Voight asked the policeman.
He moved his flashlight across the pavement. "Well, uh... it's a hole in the road."
"How does that fit in with this?"
"If you would follow me..." He waved at all of us. "There's something not quite right with this pothole."
We walked a little ways from the building until we came to a pothole that was roughly a foot in diameter.
Voight and Antonio crouched down to get a better look at it.
"What's different about it?" Jay asked to no one in particular.
"Wait, hold on." I moved beside Antonio and practically stuck my head in the hole. "Don't move," I told the both of them.
"What's wrong?" Voight asked me.
I placed my hand at the bottom and brushed some gravel aside. Underneath was a white cloth.
I only responded with, "Call the bomb squad."
He cautiously took his phone out of his jacket pocket and dialed the number. "Hey, it's Hank Voight. I need you to roll some of your unit down here at the sports bar by Molly's. We have a possible bomb buried under the ground." He paused and listened to the other person on the line. "Yeah. Thanks." He ended the call and stuck the phone back in the pocket.
"Don't move," Antonio ordered.
I carefully traced my fingers along the outline of a hard object underneath the piece of cloth. I bunched up some of the white material in my hand and lifted it, holding my breath as I did. I immediately heard a soft beeping sound as I saw what was beneath the ground. A metal box was surrounded by dirt and concrete. I was blinded by a small screen that suddenly lit up.
