The ER doctors turned their heads when we burst through the doors. I followed one as they took Jay into a small room. He looked at me as if to say, what's wrong?
I took a quick glance at him before I informed the doctor. "He has an internal hemorrhage. A piece of metal hit him after a bomb went off."
"Thanks for the info, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Maybe get yourself checked out?"
I nodded in agreement and exited the room. I was about to check myself in to the ER, but Erin caught me.
"How is he?" She looked distraught.
"Fine for now. The only thing we can do is wait." I inched a little closer to the desk.
"They caught him." She ran a hand though her hair. "Slate."
"Good. He probably has one hell of a storm coming."
"Ma'am, do you need something?" The lady at the desk asked.
Erin flashed a quick smile before she moved over to Kim.
"Um... yeah. It's just glass." I moved my hair back to reveal my scalp.
"Oh, honey, that's gonna take a while to clean up." She rolled her chair back, stood up, and waved someone over.
A young girl in a white lab coat warily walked over. "Yes?"
"Reese, get the glass out of her scalp and arm."
"Ok..." She grabbed pair of forceps on a nearby cart. "Follow me."
I trailed behind her and sat down on a hospital bed in a small room.
She soaked a cotton pad in alcohol before she rubbed it on my head. I quietly moaned in pain.
"Sorry about that." She took the tweezers and began to pick the glass shards out. "I'm curious as to how you got this. It's not everyday that we have a bunch of cops come in."
"A bomb went off and glass from a car hit me. At least I'm not like my partner."
"Is that the man who came in with a piece of metal in side?"
"Yeah. That's him."
"I'm just a fourth year medical student, so if I hurt you in any way, just tell me."
"I'm assuming you want to work in this ER?"
"Nah," She leaned in closer. "Honestly, I'd much rather be working in a lab."
"Why-"
Sudden yelling came from outside the room.
"Will! Now's not the time!" I couldn't make out who was talking.
Will must've yelled back. "Hey, it is."
The door came flying open and a man with copper hair stood in front of me.
He pointed a finger at me. "Are you Sydney Morell?"
"Yes..."
Reese said, "Dr. Halstead, give me a few more minutes and I'll be done?"
He hesitated for a moment before he responded. "Yeah, alright." He glanced at me one last time before he stepped out of the room.
"Is that-" I started.
"Dr. Will Halstead? He's the senior resident of the ER."
"Is that his brother?"
"Who's?"
"My partner, Jay."
"Uh, I think he's mentioned a Jay before. I didn't know he had a brother. I don't really know a lot about the doctors and nurses around here. I'm just trying to get past medical school." She reached for a bandage and wrapped my head and arm. "Anyways, you should be good to go. Just keep it all clean and be careful when you take a shower." She handed me a clipboard. "And now I need you to rate me." She smiled awkwardly. "It's for school."
