Booze. That is the most prominent smell that I can detect as I arrived in New Orleans. As I carried my large rucksack over my shoulder, I dodged my way through the densely populated streets. Making my way towards the apartment block, where I had recently been in contacts with the landlord, to rent one of the apartments. Struggling with the door, I managed to open it successfully and greet a middle aged man who introduced himself. After signing some sheets of paper, and going through rules, I was handed a key and I made my way to through the rustic corridor to the stairs where I climbed a few floors until I reached apartment 11. Opening the elder wooden door, I came across my new home. It had the basics, small kitchen area, a set of stairs which led to an open bedroom, and a wall sized bookcase (books provided).
Placing my bag onto the couch, I ran my hand softly across the bookcase gazing up longingly at the masses of reads that I craved. The fact that I had probably already have read half, if not most of them didn't discourage me from wanting to read each one. The sound of my obnoxious phone rang through my new apartment. A small smile graced my soft features as I read the caller ID.
"Evangeline, how are darling?" The elder female voice broke through the phone, making me giggle at her pet name of 'darling'.
"I'm fine, I've just arrived at my new place" I reply as I scan the room as if they were showing her what I was looking at.
"And may I be included as to where this new place is about in the world?" My grandmothers question was expected but pointless.
"You know I can't, he could use you to get to know where I am, it's a big enough risk just letting you know my number!" I answer with a sigh. The disappointment was thick in my voice as I just wanted to run through the the phone and hug my grandma, however with the beast on my back I could never return home.
"I miss you darling... But before I bring both of our moods down with mentioning that vile, repulsive excuse of a... Anyway what age have you decided to be this time?"
"...21"
"Evangeline! You can't pretend to be 6 years older than yourself! I mean I know that you can pull it off with your maturity both emotionally and physically... It just breaks my heart knowing that I can't take care of you... And all these years you've been running..."
With tears glistening in my eyes I replied
"It's not your fault grandma, it never has been. I'm only pretending to be 21 because it's easier to find work. And before you start feeling worse, I don't mind working... And maybe one day I can visit but it's too risky at the moment".After having a long, loving conversation with her I finished it off with a goodbye and hung up. And started unpacking my rucksack, making bets with myself to see how long this one will last, but maybe I can hold this one out, New Orleans seems to be holding festivals every weekend. Maybe I can blend. Finishing up, which didn't take long as I pack light incase of short notice emergency departure, I changed putting on some black ripped skinny jeans, loose grey crop top, and tied my blue based check shirt around my waist. Taking a deep breath, I clutched my mothers pendent on the necklace, placing it under my top, I prepared my self for the job searching, I grabbed my CV, and fake ID as I locked up and headed off.
Walking a couple of streets, I came across a bar, looking up at he sign, it was called "Rousseau's". I collected myself, the pushed the door open and headed straight to the bar, with a determined look on my face I waited for the bartender to finish with her costumer. When she did she turned to me with a polite smile and asked my what she could get me.
"Hi...(looking at her name tag) Camille, I was wondering if there were any positions available?"
Relief was sketched upon her face as I said that, as her medium length blonde hair fell out from behind her ear she replied with a sigh
"Yes actually, two girls just quit and if you're up for loads of shifts as the manager is getting desperate as she told me I could hire someone, so if I could just see your ID I'm willing to sort out your shifts now if that's ok?"
A bright smile broke through, as pure happiness flooded through my veins as last time it took me ages for me to find work and now it took the first place to go to accept me.
"No problem at all!"After showing her my ID, we arranged my rota and she called the manager who was alated to have another employee. We discussed wages and it was extremely decent, meaning I could pay my rent and have a huge social life while having emergency money. I was more than relieved. After deciding I would start tonight, so that Cami could show me the ropes. Little to her knowledge I had worked in more bars than she herself had. As the evening had passed on, while we were sorting the arrangements, the bar had started to get a little hectic. While I was putting on my waist apron, Cami went out to battle the punters. I swiftly joined her, and decided to have a little fun and showed of my little tricks with tossing shot glasses and pouring the pints in record time. While Cami raised an amused eyebrow, stating that I was a natural and I should be supervising her.
As we are having a laugh together, a handsome man came up to me to order. He has short curly blonde locks, blue eyes and some scruff. With a smirk he ordered some bourbon, he greeted Cami. Making me assume they knew each other, however with the blush that crept onto her face I presume that they were more than friends. Whilst teasing Cami, I tossed the glass onto the bar, twirled and reached for the bottle and poured him a healthy sized glass.
"And that'll be..." I was interrupted by the guy, who looked me straight in the eyes and said
"Nah, love think that this will be on the house"
I blinked. And replied
"I don't think so mate, that doesn't quiet work on me... Your charm and everything, especially because it's my first shift so pay up".
The man, whose name I learnt to be Klaus from Cami, looked shocked... Scratch that he looked bewildered as to why it hadn't worked. Until he mumbled something that I almost didn't catch
"No vervain...".
