It was crazy, why did i agree to this? My thoughts are bubbling like never before. I've never smoked before. I've heard stories, but never once touched my lips to cannabis. Tabitha would never- my train of thought came to a halt when i heard voices through the vent. It was my mom and another man. I could smell Chinese food and decided i should stop over thinking go down for dinner. Odd, my mom has never brought someone home after a school day before.
Our furniture was old. Our dark oak table was covered in school kids un graded work, and chopsticks. To my surprise my mom was in the kitchen alone. Her outfit was a typical school teachers outfit. Her wool sweater was contrasting with her pants. To bad she had to cover up her figure. She looked different. unlike usual, she was smiling. I thought i should take a risk and ask why she was smiling. She honestly looked like she did before my father left us. She turned, and smiled some more. It was odd, I didn't hear the sugar daddies voice anymore. Who was she talking too?
As the night went on my mom said nothing. She just graded and ate orange chicken between every paper. My mind was going crazy, what with the weed, and the mystery mans voice. The fact that my mom wasn't talking didn't make it any better. I began to tap my fist against the table, then i began to pound it.
"Eli, something wrong?" My mom said with that smile still painted on her face.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Cant your mother smile once in awhile, baby doll, why haven't you touched your food yet?"
I looked down, and to my surprise, i had a full plate of food left. I could have sworn I ate.
"I dont know, im not to hungry, can i be excused?"
Her smile broke and turned to a frown. "Your not even going to tell me how your day went? I know since-"
I cut her off. The last thing i wanted was her pity about Tabitha. Something went off inside of me. It was like i had no filter and my words poured out faster then the Colorado rivers flow.
"My day was good mom. How was yours? Wait, i dont even have to ask, i can tell you met a new sugar daddy by that grin on your face. since when do you ever smile mom. Who is he? What do you want this time?"
She stared at me for what seemed to be forever. A single tear rolled down her cheek and she said
" I want our family back"
