--¦ Prologue ¦--
Fear spread through my chest. It was dark outside, but the fierce orange flames lit up the night sky. I had to do something, but I felt so lonely, so empty. I wanted to die. Why did everything have to go so slow? I heard the drumming of stormclouds in the distance. Just a moment and it would all be over. Finally.
In the end, it had all been for nothing. I had travelled along a path, found out the truth and finally knew who I really was - but it had all been useless. I was going to die and nothing would have changed. I should have died the first time, before all this happened. Why was I still alive? To hurt me even more? To let me build up a life and then take it all away like it was only temporarily?
But in fact, it was temporarily. All this time I had known it would end somewhere. The clock that kept on ticking in the back of my mind, slowly taking away my remaining time - I had known it all along. I could have prepared better for it, could have fought, but right now I was glad I hadn't. This was supposed to happen, I was supposed to die. Only it should have happened years ago. But how were you supposed to fight anyway, when you were being attacked by the devil from two sides?
And here I stood, at the exact place it had all started. The centuries-long battle would end here. He had won, I had lost. I couldn't mend the world, but at least I would stop it from suffering.
I looked him straight in the eye.
The fear in my chest became so strong that it almost hurt me, like my heart and ribcage were clenched between heavy walls. I had a hard time breathing.
I stopped breathing when he raised his arm up to the heavens, ready for the final strike. I didn't dare look away from his eyes and I knew this was it. I might have escaped death before, but this was definitely the last time.
My last breath caught in my throat when the lightning stroke and I saw a flash of light, after which a heavy, tormenting agony erupted in my body and everything turned black for the very last time.
