One More Shot
A Valentine's Day Fail
The cold is now just a distant memory as the sun beats down on me with a promise of spring in the air. A slight breeze wafts throughout the patio area I'm sitting at, enjoying a cup of ever so delicious coffee. I watch the couple at the table across from me. They keep smiling and laughing at every single phrase they utter to one another. Just as the girl bites into the delicious slice of chocolate cake in front of her, a loud metal clang sounds as a small piece of metal meets the iron table before her. She stares at it in shock, unaware that her boyfriend is now on his knee beside her with a hopeful grin on his face.
I continue watching as tears begin leaking from her eyes, a loud indistinguishable yes bursting from her lips. She joins him on the floor, throwing her arms around him in a hug, the force of which nearly knocks him over in the process. An eruption of cheers and whistles echoes throughout the outside and inside of the coffee shop, eager onlookers pressing their noses against the glass to spot the common Valentine's Day cliché.
Something about this day makes everyone a little desperate and a little too corny.
The day being February 14th: Valentine's Day.
Case in point: "Careful, you're extremely hot."
"What?" I grudgingly ask, looking away from the spectacle before me and to the floppy haired blonde beside me.
The guy smirks at my question, pointing to my coffee as if it holds all the answers to the universe.
"Oh wow, did I say you're? I meant the coffee is extremely hot."
"God that was a lame pickup line," I remark, shaking my head at his failed attempt.
This morning I had rolled out of bed and thrown on a hoodie and sweatpants, practically shoving my middle fingers in this holiday's face. All I scheduled today was to get coffee and stick my nose in a book until all the couples of the universe go back to just being annoying and not extremely annoying.
Of course when I decided to go out and get coffee, I stupidly forgot to consider the desperate singles out here scrambling to find a last minute Valentine's Day date.
"If I can think of some better ones, will you let me sit down?" He challenges after a few moments of uncomfortable silence.
I sigh and lean back in my chair, gesturing as if to say 'go ahead'.
His smile gets larger, revealing two dimples. "Ok, how about this one: Can I get your number? Because I like you a latte."
My hand goes to my chin as if I'm pondering the success of his pick up line. "Hmm, better. What else you got?"
"They call me coffee because I grind so fine."
I can't help but throw my head back and laugh at that one. "Next!" I get out between labored breaths.
"You turned me down before, but I'm asking for an extra shot."
I kick the chair next to me away from the table; finally deciding it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to give this guy a chance. He grins as he takes a seat, placing his coffee on the table and leaning back comfortably.
