“No talking, no eating, no using your phones, and no getting up out of your seat.” I sat numbly at my desk, my hands in my lap as I stared blankly at the teacher standing at the front of the room. Although I was first to arrive in the detention room, I opted to sit at the back of the class, away from everybody else.
Within ten minutes, the room had been slowly filled with delinquents, stoners, tattoos and piercings. The sullen looking teacher gazed around the room, finally connecting her eyes with mine. She seemed confused, probably wondering how a perfect little schoolgirl like me ended up in a place like this.
“If any of you break these rules, I will add another hour. For everyone.” A chorus of groaning filled the room, and the teacher cast a disapproving over everyone. “I have some work to do in the other room, but I will be leaving the door open, and I will still be able to hear you. Your three hours begins now.” She left the room quickly, and for a moment I believed the class would stay silent, but sure enough, after about a minute of uncomfortable silence, the first question was fired my way.
“I ain’t seen you around before.” Keeping my eyes in front of me, I ignored the curious students.
“You’re that nerd kid in my English class, right?”
“What’d you do to end up here?”
“I heard she wagged class.”
“Yeah right, like that little prissy would skip class.” The sound of footsteps echoed throughout the class, and the teacher, whose name I still didn’t know, walked back into the room. Strutting dramatically to the whiteboard, she slowly changed what was supposed to be only three hours, to four.
Silence filled the room. Glancing down at my watch, I realised I would be late for dinner. I groaned internally, and finally decided that if I was going to be here for this long, I would make the most of it.
I pulled my ring binder out of my bag and set it down on my desk. After completing all my homework within minutes, I gazed sulkily around the room. Most of the desks were in groups, apart from a few at the back of the room, which sat on their own. Nobody was paying any attention to me, which I took for granted, but the things they were doing weren’t much better.
The table directly in front of me were in the process of rolling some kind of probably illegal substance into thin tubes then pocketing them into their coats. One of them was actually smoking, just hiding the cigarette whenever the teacher looked up.
The rest of the tables were doing similar things. Some smoking, some drinking from water bottles that probably didn’t contain water, and others just staring into space. On the far right, near the front of the class, sat the group of boys I had run into when I was escaping from the bathroom. They were all firing spit balls around the room and making rude gestures at others on the other side of the class.
The one person who was separated, I noted, was Liam. He was sitting at the back, alone like me, doing what looked like sketching. His hand moved quickly over the page, and he stopped every few minutes to look over his work. Sighing, I began to stare at the page in front of me, hoping to find inspiration.
