I was rehearsing in the mirror. "I've learned about war and that war, war never changes. The reason may change, the people may change, but war itself, the primal lust to fight and kill, never changes. War never does." I said, hoping that I didn't forget my speech. I was just finishing when Nora, my wife walked up behind me. "Your going to knock them down at the veterans ball today honey, don't worry."
"It's hard not to, I've never had to do this before."
"You've fought in several wars before, how hard can speaking to a group of fellow fighters be?"
"You'd be amazed." I said, running my hand along the scar that started on the right side of my forehead and went across my eye, and down onto my chin.
"I thought they respected a man with battle scars?" She asked.
"Yes but some respect the men who had everything to lose, lost, and never stopped fighting anyway."
"You were like that, weren't you? Down but not out?"
"Yes, do you think I should cover the burn, or leave it be?" I asked, referring to the burn scar that was on the left side of my neck.
"No, it looks sexy." She said, kissing me. "Now get out of the way blondey, I need to get ready too!"
"Fine, fine, fine!" I left the bathroom and turned right, heading over to the kitchen. Codsworth had made a big pot of coffee and I wasn't going to skimp on it.
"Good morning sir! I believe that the coffee is just how you like it!" Said the robot.
"Thanks Codsworth. Nora, do you want any coffee?" I asked
"Yes please, darling." She replied. We spent to next ten minuets getting ready for the ball when a man knocked on the door, I opened it and he gleefully said; "Vault-tech calling, hello sir, now I understand that you are a busy man, and I won't waste much time of yours, time being a precious commodity."
"What ever it is you're selling, I want none of it." I said sternly, reaching to close the door.
"Not selling anything at all sir, just informing you that due to you're outstanding service to our country has granted you a place in the local Vault-tech vault."
"Why should I care?"
"Well, not to worry you, but time is limited." He said lowering his voice, so not to worry Nora. "The powers that be are coming to blows, and we'll be caught in the cross fire, believe me."
"I'm so relived an event that my not happen in my lifetime is wasting my time now."
"Sir the end is inevitable. I'm just making sure that you're ready for it." He said, trying to guide the conversation.
"Fine, what is it you said about a Vault?"
"Ah yes you see here Vault-tech is prepared for the end, and in order to survive the radiation fires of the Chinese Rage, we've built a large amount of under ground sanctuaries called Vaults, these Vaults are completely safe from this nuclear threat."
"Where do I sign up then, my family's safety is number one."
"It's a very simple process, I just need your name and some personal information from you and you're lovely wife to get you in. Unfortunately your robot cannot come along."
"Sir that is all right, your safety is first above my own. I understand." Codsworth added.
"Really, thank you Codsworth" I looked to the man "Okay then what do you need?"
"Name, birthday and anything you think will help your living in the vault, educational history and skills." He said, handing me and Nora a sheet of paper. I filled it out; I went to a good school, passed my academic courses and was a champion on the wrestling team. I couldn't talk anyone into anything and was very unlucky, I had eagle eyes. I had a high endurance and was pretty agile. Nora was a good talker and was extremely lucky and very agile, being a gymnastics champion. We finished filling the forms out and handed them back to the Vault-Tech representative and he thanked us for our time. He left and headed down the street to bug the Andersons.
