I looked around the main street and at all the shops which in the past few years I had hung out with my friends enjoying the hot chocolates we brought at the café during the winter and the milkshakes in the summer. I sighed knowing that for a long time I won’t be able to feel that freedom again. I stood up straight and the wind blew my hair back then I looked to my right and saw that a shop was still open, it was the café, I walked across the road and walked up the two steps pushing open the door and I heard the chime of the bell that rang when the door was opened and I smiled, when I was younger I would open and close that door listening to it until the owner asked me politely to stop and after the 10th time I would stop and sit down with my parents giggling. I walked up to the front counter and waited for the person to turn around from cleaning a cup and he turned around and smiled.
“What can I get for you??” he winked and I fought the impending eye roll then I looked at the menu behind him,
“Hot chocolate with three marshmallows extra cream please” I said
“Sure coming right up” he replied still trying to dazzle me with his smile, I looked around at the café as he started to make my hot chocolate and I heard the doorbell ring and I looked at the door and saw it was the guy in the car,
“Shit” I said under my breath as I pulled my hood down more covering my face the guy turned around with my hot chocolate in his hand and he pushed it towards me on a little plate a spoon lying on the side of the plate.
“Here you go, free of charge” he said and I raised my eyebrow
“Seriously?? Wouldn’t your manager kill you” I questioned he laughed,
“I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t” he said which caused me to tilt my head.
“Are you sure??” I asked,
“I’m sure” he replied with a chuckle.
“How can you be so sure??” I questioned him again,
“Because I don’t plan on committing suicide” he laughed and my face turned serious,
“Don’t even joke about suicide, it’s not funny” I growled at him and took the hot chocolate and walked over to the far side of the café sitting down and I began stirring the liquid around with the spoon watching the steam float into the air. I saw the ‘manager’ and the guy from the car talking and the both occasionally looked at me “I would prefer people to say things to my face, rather than to my back” I said as I licked some of the cream of the spoon, they both look in my direction.
“How did…”
“I’m not stupid” I interrupted him “I know when people are talking about me behind my back and I find it very rude” they both stared at me mouths wide open. I stood up “better close those mouths or you’ll attract flies” I smirked and walked over to them and whispered “actually leave them open if you wish, even a fly wouldn’t want to smell your breath” I laughed and pushed open the front door to the café and walked out into the dark night
