“Pack only essentials. Nothing that is too heavy or will slow you down. Try to fit everything in a small duffel bag. Go to the nearest train station and make your way to the next town over. At the first stop, there will be a navy blue school bag placed under a bench. When you get there, contact me again.”

The lady explained this to me quickly as soon as I called her. A week has passed since I made my decision.

I was leaving.

I took a deep breath as I wrote down her instructions. When I was sure I had written everything down, I spoke.

“I have a few questions” I said.

“Yes?” the woman said in a very serious tone.

“First question; when should I leave?”

“As soon as possible. Tonight if you can. The bag is already placed so leave the first chance you get” she said. Her tone scared me a little. So serious and determined.

God, I wish I knew what my dad was up to.

I began to pace back and forth in the bedroom and ran a hand through my hair.

“Okay. Second question; what do I tell my mom? She's obviously going to get worried if I don't call her for a while” I said.

“Don't tell her anything. The less you tell people, the better.”

“What?” I snapped. “How does that make sense? I should at least tell her some believable lie so she won't worry. I don't want her thinking another one of her kids is dead.”

“Amanda, believe me, this way is better. If you tell her a lie and she tries to contact you by calling someone else, it could be worse for all of us. Please do as I say” she said.

I raised my eyebrows and opened my mouth to retaliate, but snapped it shut a second later and decided against it.

“Fine. I'll do it your way. I have one more question” I said as tears started to well in my eyes.

“What is it?”

I closed my eyes and bit my lip to stop the tears. When I was ready to speak, I said, “What do I tell Louis, my cousin, and my friends?”

I really didn't want to leave them, but I was doing this for them. The only way to save them was to leave them.

Well, apparently it was the only way. I still didn't know what the hell was going on.

“I'm sorry to say this, but the best way to do this would be to break up with Louis, then tell your cousin and your friends that staying with them is too much to handle because Louis is around, so you're moving away” said the lady.

I was silent for a while. I had a feeling that she would say something like that. I was thinking it myself. I didn't try to hold in the tears this time.

After a minute or two of silence, I wiped the tears from my face and spoke.

“Okay. I'll do it. I'll call you when I get the bag. I'll leave first thing tomorrow morning” I said, my voice shaking a little.

Tonight was too early to leave. I wanted one more night with my friends. After a good night sleep and a fresh mind, I'll do everything I have to do and leave.

“Alright. One more thing; destroy the phone you are using as soon as possible” the lady said.

“What?! But how am I supposed to contact you tomorrow?” I said in a panic.

“There will be a disposable cellular device in the bag I left for you. From now on, you will only use that phone to contact me. Please do as I say and destroy this phone. We need to eliminate anything that can be used to trace where you are. Understood?”
