Maya
I was never confident in myself.
I was never the kind of girl that could strut into a room and enchant everyone with their dazzling smiles and impressive body language. In fact, I was just the opposite, a young overly developed crybaby that avoided the spotlight ANY chance it would find its way near me. That excluded my best friend, Karin, who was the sunshine of my always cloudy life. She was everything I wasn't, which was pretty cliche in terms of two opposites becoming friends etc. etc.
She, firstly, was light skinned, not that I was tar, I was proud of the light mocha skin I received from my late father but she just stood out amongst the others, you could identify her without having to strain yourself. She had chocolate brown eyes that I envied because I inherited hazel from my Caucasian mother, as well as, my curly black hair (I must have looked like an alien.) The last thing I would kill for is her slim build because I hated to referred to as "thick" so I decided to hide myself. I spotted big clothes, at least two sizes bigger than me.
At first my mother was a bit skeptical about buying unfashionable clothing for her only daughter but it took A LOT of convincing to actually get me plain T-Shirt and knickers khakis which took up 90% of my wardrobe. She probably thought I was a tomboy.
"Maya!" I heard my mother's voice from downstairs calling me," Hurry up you're going to be late for school!"
"I'll be right there!" I replied, putting my back length hair into a messy ponytail and grabbing the old skateboard my older brother left me before he went to college.
I quickly cascaded down the stairs and into the small hallway that connected to the front door and the living room. There, my mother stood with a green apple and my white, slightly dirtied backpack.
"Forgetting these?" She asked, a mischievous smile on her pale but beautifully aged face.
"Haha no, not when I knew you had them." I replied, taking the backpack and apple and kissing her cheek.
"See ya later." I said, placing my bag on my back and riding the skateboard as I left the house.
I watched my mother wave as she got further and further away and turned to what was in front of me as I glided on the two wheeled contraption. I suddenly heard my phone ring, it was Karin.
"Hey Rin, what's up?" I asked, making a left turn.
"M, where are you? Crush is coming RIGHT NOW." She squealed and I rolled my eyes at her behavior.
Karin Bethany Morris has had a crush on Seth Morgan, resident school bad boy since freshman year. His profile fitting the cliches with his handsome body, accent, riches and arrogant behaviour that made all the girls swoon, except me of course. I was cool with Seth and although we may not have spoken much, he was nice and funny despite the rumours that always seem to spread when he was around.
"Where are you?? You should be here." She whined, probably pouting off her bright pink lips, a habit she does when things don't go out the way they planned.
I rolled my eyes and sighed at her behaviour as I turned a corner.
This happens almost everyday. Seth would come out of his Porsche all fresh to death and Karin and I would be there to meet him, she always having an argument with him as if they hated each other when they clearly didn't.
"How can my mojo come to me if my best friend is not present!!" She shouted into the phone and I winced at her shrieking, seeing her loud outfit from down the street, her back turned towards his car as Seth strut towards her.
I was right by her side before she could say a word and it caught her a bit off guard but of course her poker face was now on and nothing cracks her poker face.
"Well hola there mamí, how are you this fine morning? Waiting on me as usual?" He asked with his signature smirk on his face, a dimple poking out his left cheek as he acknowledged me with a nod.
"Waiting on you? Boy I was here for maya so don't boost yourself and stop Callin' me "Mamí" when you know my name" she retorted sassily with hands on hips as if she wasn't the same whiny person she was a second ago.
"Yea and what was that again? Kate? Kayla? Katya? I got so many girls on my checklist I can't even recall" he started to tease and she rolled her eyes lowkey flirtatiously.
"Boy stop playin' you know my name and might as well stop comin close if you don't, I ain't about that AIDS"
As he was about to respond, his phone started to ring.
"One sec.." He said taking his device out of his back pocket and looking at the caller ID. "Mierda.... I'll have to catch up with you guys later, my next meal is Callin' if you know what I mean."
He wriggled his eyebrows and walked off to take the call. I peeked over to see a smile on Karin's face but the slight feeling of envy and hurt still had shown through her eyes.
"You okay?" I asked, resting a hand on her exposed shoulder.
"Y-Yea I'm fine, lets go to class before we get a detention." She said walking to the door.
"Sounds good." I replied, looking forward to the day.
