Chapter 7: A Scene In Slow Motion
As I roll awake, stretching my arms and giving up a yawn, I immediately realize something.
I didn't dream about Andrew last night.
Automatically, this puts me in a great mood. I guess I'm finally getting over him.
After my fantastic date with Ryan last night i fell right asleep, so Im awake pretty early this morning. Checking my phone, I notice that I have 2 new messages. One is from my brother, saying he is going to the beach with his baseball team for the day, and the other one makes me smile.
From: Ryan
Message: Mornin' beautiful. Can't wait to see you later. How's 3 sound? ;)
Instantly I feel my heart flutter. I try to imagine his voice as I re-read the message a million times, before I reply:
To:Ryan
Message: Good morning :) 3 sounds great!
Placing my phone back on my nightstand, I pull my hair into a messy bun and jog downstairs in my yoga shorts and old softball T. To my surprise, I see my mom dressed in her usual business suit making breakfast in the kitchen. She looks up when she hears me coming, and says
"Well, isn't this a bit uncharacteristic of you to be up at the time normal people start their day?"
She didn't say it in a sarcastic way, but she also wasn't saying it as a joke. On any other day I would have shot back a rude comment and we would fight like always, but not today. Today I am feeling great, and not even she can ruin it.
"Thought id try something new today." I casually reply as I sit down at the island and begin to swivel on the barstool.
She finishes with breakfast quickly without trying to continue a conversation. She will be out the door on her way to work in a matter of minutes, so what's the point? Grabbing her briefcase and car keys, she mumbles a goodbye as she answers an incoming work call, and shuts the front door behind her. My mom is a defense attorney, and her work is her love, and her life. My dad on the other hand, prefers to play golf at fancy country clubs, go to sports games, and write reviews about them for his website. Both of them make a good living, so we are rather well of, but neither are around much. Dad is always traveling, and though mom only works during the day, she enjoys working late and always taking work home with her. Always. Neither of them are ever really there, and it's never bothered me too much. If they are happy, and I get to live my life without being questioned at every turn, why should I complain?
After finishing my blueberry pancakes, I take a long relaxing shower, and slip on my bathing suit. The navy blue mid-kini has vibrant pink and orange flowers scattered across the material, and fits my frame nicely. Grabbing my iPod and sun glasses, I make my way out to the backyard. Positioning myself on a float, I drift off into the middle of our large in-ground pool. The faint sound of Mayday Parade songs can be heard through the speakers of my ihome, which is placed on the deck. It's a cloudy day, so I don't expect to get much sun, but the air is warm and comfortable. Slipping on my sunglasses, I lean back, close my eyes, and let the music fill my head. I cannot wait to see Ryan later, so keeping calm is kind of difficult. Yet somehow, I end up drifting off to sleep.
------------RYAN'S POV------------------
I've spent hours waiting and now I can finally go pick up Nichole. I can barely sit still as I drive to her house. I don't really have anything planned for us today, I was just hoping we could hang out and enjoy each others company.
