Chapter 1:
"We're here," I heard a voice snapping me out of my daydreaming. I looked up from my book, which i was just staring at, without reading a single word and nodded as my eyes met with Mr. Simon's, who was in charge of my allocations. You might be wondering who I am so let me tell you. My name is Haley Simpson and to be very honest, there isn't much about me that you can know because I don't know much about myself either. I've spent all my life in an orphanage and recently, Mr. Simon, a staff member from the orphanage, has been in charge of taking me to different households who were willing to let me stay at their house. This was the only way that I was going to get adapted. Weird, I know but that was the policy of the orphanage.
My last "home" was in Singapore. From there, Orlando was VERY far and I would need some time to get used to the weather, people, food... Well, everything! Or maybe I might not be needing a lot of time, considering that moving around is what I have been doing all my life and I should be a pro at being the "new girl". Now that I've given you a pretty boring History lesson about my life, it's time to come back to the present day. I looked out of the window of the car and saw a big... No huge cream coloured house. My eyes widened a little bit as I took in the view of the house, or should I say mansion. Mr. Simon caught my expression through the rear- view mirror and let out a hearty laugh.
"The McDonoughs were very kind as to let you stay here. Haley, I welcome you to your new home," he said. I let out a small 'wow' and smiled, still staring at the house. I heard the engine being turned off and Mr. Simons turned to the back seat, where i was currently sitting. He looked at me and just smiled, knowing that he didn't have to tell me the whole 'be careful... everything will be find' story again as I had heard it many times before and knew it by heart. I returned his smile and taking in a deep breath, thought to myself 'well, Hal, this is it. Time to put on your happy face again!' With that, I pushed open the door and stepped outside.
Suddenly, it hit me. Did Mr. Simon say McDonoughs? My eyes grew wide at the thought. I only knew that name from one very famous place: the Internet.
"Let it not be what I think it is, let it not be what I think it is," I kept muttering under my breath. I followed Mr. Simon to the front door, a little nervous now then before. I held my breath as Mr. Simon's finger went to the doorbell.
