- Prologue -

I woke up to the sound of someone banging on my room door. I groan and get up to answer the door.

As I fling the door open, I exclaim angrily, "What?!"

It was Christian, my older brother who had been banging on my door. His eyes were looking from left to right with fear in his eyes.

Fear? What is there to be afraid of?

"We need to get out of here now" he states then he walks into my room.

I raise an eyebrow, "Wait, why?"

He grabs my backpack and says, "Pack" he doesn't answer my question. "Be quick."

I cross my arms in front of my chest. "Why? What's going on?"

He runs a hand through his hair and opens his mouth to answer but a scream stops him. I tense in my spot and his eyes widen. He shuts the door and locks it.

"For crying out loud Christian! What is going on?!"

"Just start packing! I'll tell you later after we get out of here!"

Heading to my closet, I begin to grab tank tops and jeans then put them into the backpack. I grab some thigns from the bathroom and after a few minutes, I'm done packing. I sling the backpack over my shoulder and ask, "Where are we going?"

He doesn't say anything and unlocks then opens the door slowly.

I look at him as he steps out of my room and I have just realized that he is holding a baseball bat with his right hand. He begins to walk down the stairs and I follow right behind him.

When we get to the living room, it was a mess. The couch was tossed over to the side, the table was turned over, there was glass on the floor, the television was broken and so was the home phone.

It was very quiet, until my mobile phone rang. I jumped in surprise and answered it, "Hello?"

"Vi? Thank God you're okay!"

"What? What's going on Alyson?"

"You know the cure for the sickness that they have been talking about on the news?"

I blink in confusion. What does that have anything to do with what's going on?

"Uhh... yeah"

"Well, it isn't a cure! It turns people into zombies!"

No freaking way!

"You're kidding me! This isn't funny Alyson!"

"I'm not kidding! Why would I joke about somethign like that?! Look, just stay safe! I'm coming over."

"But Alyson..." all I heard on the other line was the dial tone, meaning she already hung up.

I sigh and Christian looks at me. "Was that Alyson?" He asks and I nod.

"She can't really be serious about that the cure would turn people into zombies." I laugh thinking that it was impossible but when I saw Christian's face, I stop laughing, all humor gone and say, "Right?"

He bites his bottom lip and says, "She's serious Vi..."

"But how...?!"

Another scream is heard and Christian raises the bat up, looking around frantically. I look around as well and see our mother making her way out of the kitchen. Her hair was messy, her eyes were black and her shoulder was missing a chunk.

"Mum... are you..." I stopped talking when she growled an unhuman growl at me and charged at me. I stood frozen in my spot just looking at her.

Tears freely fell down my face as my brother swung the bat, connecting with our mother's head.

Blood splattered everywhere and our mother fell to the floor unmoving.

My legs shook under me causing me to fall to my knees. Christian went to my side and grabbed my arm gently, pulling me up. I clung onto his arm, "Mum... what... was she a...."

He sighs and I see a single tear fall down his cheek as he says, "Yes... She was a zombie..."
