Stella smiled at the cashier as she put her items on the counter; one tarp, a roll of duct tape, some rope, a blowtorch, a taser, and a giant case of Vienna Sausages. The fat man behind the counter, a man by the name of Bill, eyed her suspiciously as he began to swipe each item. "My husband and I are going camping.." Stella said, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear. "I hope we have enough food to last through the weekend."
She tried to sound as chipper as possible, hoping that the cashier would buy her story. But it appeared that he could care less what she intended to do with the items. Bill scanned the Vienna sausages. "You certainly have enough canned sausage to last ya." He grunted.
"Yeah, I never really was a very good cook." Stella chuckled. Her voice was so mellow that she was starting to convince herself that she was going on a camping trip. Since when have I been so calm during insane situations? She wondered as she watched the man scan the roll of duct tape.
After bagging the duct tape, the man picked up the taser. "So, why do ya need a taser to go camping, little lady?"
"For bears-" Stella blurted, saying the first thing that popped into her head. "I'm on my period right now and I heard bears can smell menstruation ." She smiled at him. "Better safe than sorry, right?"
Bill's face flushed thirty five shades of red. His eyes shifted away from Stella's and he finished scanning the last two items. "That'll be eighty seven dollars and fifty three cents.." He said, extending his hand out. Stella opened her wallet and pulled out a hundred dollar bill, handing it to him. He printed her receipt and handed her the change.
Stella smiled at him again. "Thank you, Bill. Have a wonderful evening."
"You do the same.."
Stella grabbed the paper sack from the counter and walked back to the Camaro. She pulled open the door and climbed inside, handing the sack to Vincent. "That's everything." She breathed, buckling her seatbelt.
"Did the cashier suspect anything?"
"No, he was clueless."
"Good.." Vincent said. He opened the top of the bag and examined the contents. His eyebrows raised. "What's with the sausage?"
"Well, it's not like I could only buy stuff that would make me look like a serial killer." Stella replied, "I had to buy something random. Besides, we might get hungry later."
"Maybe. But there is no way I'm going to eat canned sausage."
"Suit yourself." Stella said as she pulled out of the parking lot of the store and drove down the main highway. Forty five minutes passed before they reached the cabin. She put the car into park and they both climbed out.
"Nice place..." Vincent said as he looked around the deserted site. Numerous trees surrounded the cabin and there was a lake right behind it. It really was the perfect place to relax....or torture someone. Depending on one's preferences. "Why don't you show me around?"
"Okay, but there really isn't that much to see..." Stella replied, walking towards the cabin. She raised the welcome mat and grabbed the key that laid under it. She unlocked the door and stepped inside.
Childhood memories bombarded her mind as she looked around the musty cabin.
Every summer her parents forced her to come here and sit inside while they fished, telling her that she wasn't mature enough to join them. She would spend her time drawing pictures, playing her flute, and talking with her imaginary friend, Matilda.
