As soon as Ruby walked through the threshold to her own house, Mrs. Digby ushered her towards Hitch's study.
"He wants to see you." She hissed. Ruby shrugged and knocked on Hitch's door before entering softly. Hitch himself was sitting in his chair at his small table sipping coffee and gestured for Ruby to sit.
"What is it?" Asked Ruby, still buzzing from the day's events. The quiet, serious expression that Hitch had adopted quite often lately was plastered on his face, which put a stop to the buzzing feeling in Ruby's stomach and was replaced with a sense of dread.
"What have I done now?" Hitch laughed.
"Nothing. Not yet anyway." Ruby took a seat and looked across at Hitch questioningly. The Spectrum agent took a long sip of his coffee before starting.
"LB didn't want to get involved in the case because...it was too personal." Ruby frowned and opened her mouth to speak but Hitch held up a hand.
"She thought it would be a danger for Spectrum agents to get involved. A security risk. And... The fact she was scared. I've never seen LB so scared in her life." Ruby sat back.
"Something personal... Her love life has been threatened to be revealed?" Ruby meant it as a joke, but Hitch stiffened and frowned. Ruby made a mental note to look into LB's past as soon as she could. Hitch leaned across the table and said in a low voice.
"I shouldn't be telling you this but..." He hesitated and at that moment Ruby knew he was hiding something, other than what he was about to tell her, but the problem was he knew she knew he wasn't telling her, and that meant he never would.
"We got a message from the Count." Ruby was interested.
"What's he got to do with personal?"
"He said that he had hoped that his message had been passed on to LB and that Spectrum could be knocked down by a feather when they were finished with them."
"They?" Hitch nodded,
"Exactly. The message had actually been sent almost a year ago, but we didn't take any notice of it till recently. It was the message the Count asked you to pass down to LB in the cave with the sea monster. You may remember..."
"The truth is safe with me." Whispered Ruby. Thousands of thoughts rushed past her eyes as she considered what Hitch had just told her. There was the obvious meaning to it, the Count had been holding a case full of truth serum at the time, hence 'the truth is safe with me', but could there have been another meaning?
"I'll look into it." She said eventually. Hitch half smiled.
"Would of thought you mad if you said otherwise. But seriously Ruby," he reached across the table and grabbed her hand.
"Tell me before you do something stupid. That way if that happens at least we'll be doing something stupid together." Ruby nodded.
"If there is any leads I'll let you know." Hitch rose.
"If there's anything you need, just ask." Ruby had her hand on the handle, eager to leave and start upon the investigation, but stopped and turned, her back against the door.
"If a boy... You know... Kisses you out of the blue... Does that mean..." Hitch grinned, enjoying her discomfort, which was rare.
"Not always. But it depends." Ruby smiled awkwardly and exited the room. Hitch shook his head and sat down to finish his coffee."That girl is mad." He told himself.
------
Ruby rushed up the steps, two at a time, eager to get down to business and do some work for once. She would need a plan. A plan to get into the file room at Spectrum, get out Baker's and LB's file, check it and put it back, all under the noses of everyone at Spectrum, particularly LB. Needless to say, the plan would require plenty of careful planning and good timing on the execution. Ruby lay down on her bed, mind just beginning to form the start of an idea, when her watched beeped. She was yet again required at Spectrum. Ruby groaned. All this moving about was hardly needed, why couldn't Spectrum just build a passage from her home to HQ? Or better still, become one of the Redfort's neighbours? Ruby sighed.
"Beats me." She said as she walked downstairs, Bug skittering at her heels.
