LB stood.
"You will not be doing much fieldwork, Mr. Bond and I have long since decided that is beyond your capabilities." LB paused and an icy silence filled the room for an agonizing few seconds. Ruby was beetroot red. Dan's other hand went to grip her knee.
"You will be searching for patterns in Miss Redfort's past five or so missions. If there is any evidence, contact Blacker-" she gestured to Blacker, "-and he will send a team. Here is the case folder. Dismissed." A shocked silence occupied the room this time. Then everyone started to file out the room. Dan pulled Ruby from the chair and pulled her towards the door. He was so angry his grip was like iron. For the first time Ruby saw Dan's incredible potential. She looked back and saw Hitch frowning and approaching LB. It looked like he was ready to argue. Mr. Bond just stood there, as impassive as usual. Then Ruby was pulled from the room. She and Dan sat in Hitch's car waiting for him to come back. He was taking a long time. Dan opened the case folder. It was almost empty save a piece of paper for each mission Ruby completed. There were no witnesses, nor any prosecutable evidence. There was also no leads apparently. Dan breathed quickly in through his nose. He turned to Ruby.
"We have two options. Disobey our organizations and solve this the way it should be solved or stick to the plan and fail." Ruby didn't hesitate in her answer.
"Spectrum and Hitch are hiding something. They were supposed to tell us but they don't trust us. Either way we choose we are fired. Let's just go for it. It worked the last five times." Dan stared at Ruby for a few seconds.
"What?" Demanded Ruby. Dan smiled and suddenly leaned over in the car and kissed her. It was quick, like the one with Clancy, and just like he said she would, she was caught off guard. Again. Dan smiled,
"Nothing, I was just thinking about what an incredibly brave partner I have." Ruby said nothing. Her head swam. She kept giving Dan a chance at friendship but he kept doing...this. She was perplexed. More importantly she didn't know what to think. Ruby Redfort never didn't know what to think.
