The smell overwhelmed him, a peculiar yet familiar sensation spreading through his nostrils. The sight of the room blinded him, the harsh sunlight bouncing off every object. His older brother had nudged him forward, towards the tired though still cheerful woman. A small newborn lay in her arms, energetically shifting around. She flashed the young man a weak but bright smile, gesturing him over with her free hand.
'Come meet your nephew, Kei,' she said happily as he approached her sheepishly.
She handed the child over, still grinning from ear to ear. Kei tensed up upon contact with such a delicate thing. He squirmed around in Kei's arms before staring up at him with curious eyes. The little thing let out short babbles before bursting into a fit of giggles.
'He likes you a lot I see,' Kei's brother had appeared behind him, laying a hand on his younger brother's shoulder.
Handing his nephew back, he politely excused himself for a brief moment. After wandering the bare, white hallways of the hospital, he had found himself on the building's roof. Filling his lungs with oxygen, he leaned on the railing and stared down at those passing on the streets.
The sound of the door sliding open caught him off guard. Whipping his head around, he was met with a small girl. She looked petite from the way the clothes barely fit her body. Her eyes held a mischievous light to them, and small wrinkles in their corners had appeared as she smiled up at him.
'I didn't expect someone else to be here,' she said, shyly shuffling over to lean to the same rail. 'You don't mind, do you?'
'No, not at all,' he replied, coolly playing off the pounding in his heart.
'So,' looking him in the eyes, 'you come here often?' She let a melodious laugh, thinking her little question was funny.
'Oh ha ha, funny,' sarcasm laced his voice as he looked away. 'My sister-in-law gave birth last night.'
'Oh, congratulations, Uncle-?' He voice hinted that there was a name she had yet to figure out that went with her sentence.
'Kei. Tsukishima Kei,' he said, turning to face her again. She beamed up at him.
'Well, it's nice to meet you, Uncle Kei!' She let out a childish giggle as she extended her hand towards him. 'I'm {Surname} {First name}.'
Something about her youthful personality entranced him. He felt as if he were conversing with an old friend from years ago. Though, this didn't prevent him from teasing her.
'So Shorty,' his usual smirk crawling on to his face, 'do you come here often?'
The way her smile slightly faulted and eyes dulled just the smallest bit brought a pang of guilt to collide with his heart. The look lingered for a moment before returning to her usual bright self.
'Just another check-up,' she said in a much quieter voice. 'It happens often but it's fine.'
Her knuckles were turning white from how tightly she was gripping the metal railing.
Tucking some strands behind her ear, she gave him a weak smile.'I'm a bit tired. It was nice meeting you Tsukishima-san.' With one last glance, she pushed herself up and walked away.
