(TRIGGER WARNING: NEEDLES AND CHEMOTHERAPY)
"You're coming with him, I assume?" The technician asked. My breath caught in my throat as both Phil and the doctor looked at me expectantly.
"Yes. Of course I'm coming with him" I said, smiling weakly down at Phil.
This was the scariest thing I had ever done.
I pushed Phil's wheelchair into the room and he climbed into the recliner that the doctor pointed to. "Dan?" He whispered nervously.
"Shh. I'm here, it'll be fine. It won't hurt.....probably" I said, then cringed at my poor choice of words.
"We have to put in an IV, but that should be the only thing that hurts" the chemo technician said, smiling brightly. "First we're going to give you anti-anxiety medicine through the tube, and then the actual medication. Are you ready?"
Phil looked back up at me and I kneeled down so that I could talk to his face instead of talking down to him. "You can do this" I said softly.
He looked back up at the doctor with scared eyes and nodded.
I felt him grip my hand tightly as they inserted the needle into his arm, then he relaxed a bit once it was in.
"See? It wasn't that bad" I smiled and patted down his hair a little bit.
He took a deep breath and nodded, giving his own weak smile.

"This feels really weird. My stomach kind of hurts." Phil complained about halfway through the treatment.
"There's only about half an hour left. You can do this." I said soothingly, placing a soft kiss on his lips. At least that wretched breathing mask was gone now.
"Just.....can you keep talking to me? Your.......your voice is comforting" he requested shyly.
"Oh....uhm, okay. I'll tell you a story."
He nodded and rested his head against the back of the chair, waiting.
"Once upon a time there was a gorgeous prince. He was famous all around the world, and had lots of Royal Subjects. All of them thought he was amazing and many of the girls wanted a shot at him. But he didn't like any of them. There was one person that caught his eye, though." I stopped and took a deep breath, hoping it wasn't too obvious what this story was about.
"A mere peasant from the village had always idolized the prince, and the prince thought that it was adorable. So Mr. Prince sent a letter to his fan, inviting him to come meet up in the market place."
Phil smirked a little bit but didn't say anything, and my face turned bright red.
"As the villager got ready, his entire body was shaking. This was all he had ever wanted, so why did he feel so scared? There was excitement too, though. Excitement anticipation and fear. At the last minute, he seriously considered not going. He knew wouldn't be able to conduct himself properly in front of Royalty. In the end, he decided to go anyway. And it was probably the best decision of my-wait no what the fuck-his life."
I stopped talking and just gazed into Phil's smiling eyes for a minute, then realized what I was doing and looked away.
"They spent the entire day together, running about the town and doing everything. That one meetup, between royalty and a mere peasant, became the start of a beautiful friendship. And later, a beautiful romance." I finished, taking a deep breath.
"That was great" Phil giggled quietly.

After his first dose of chemo was over it had been determined that we could go home. All the doctors wanted him to go out in a wheelchair, but he insisted on walking, leaning against my side with our fingers intertwined.
It turned out that none of his family could actually come from Florida at the drop of a hat, and his mum had just overreacted. So we were basically all alone.

Once home I had Phil lay on the couch, and I was running (yes, literally running) around gathering every singe blanket and pillow in the house.
It wasn't until he was buried in piles of blankets and stuffed animals and propped up with loads of pillows that I finally sat down and took a breath.
"Dan. Calm down. I'll be okay." Phil said, looking at me earnestly.
"Your lungs are the shittiest things on earth and ugh I hate them" I exclaimed suddenly.
Phil jumped and bit his lip, not meeting me eyes. "I'm sorry" he whispered.
