One day after school, Aria decided to go to The Brew to grab a coffee for herself because she knew she'd need the caffeine to be able to stay up late and study for the big History test she had the next day. While waiting in line, she decided to get Spencer a cup as well so she could surprise her girlfriend and they could have a little study date together. She paid for the two drinks and hurried off to her car, feeling excited to see Spencer.Minutes later she was walking through the back door of Spencer's house with her History book and notes and the two coffees, letting herself in because she knew Spencer wouldn't mind. When Aria saw that Spencer wasn't in the kitchen, she knew that she had to be up in her room, so she made her way up the stairs with all of her things. Spencer's bedroom door was closed, but Aria walked in without knocking because she didn't feel like it was necessary.
"Hey babe," she said as she walked through the door. At first glance everything seemed normal, but it didn't take long for the small girl to realize what she had just walked into. She gasped loudly and dropped everything she was holding as she saw her girlfriend looking like a deer caught in the headlights with a razor blade in her hand, about the make a cut into her wrist. "Oh my God, Spencer," she said in the most heartbroken voice, her eyes instantly welling up with tears. She rushed over to her girlfriend as fast as her little legs could take her and before doing anything else, she grabbed the blade out of Spencer's hand and tossed it into the trash can by where the broken girl was sitting. Aria knew that wasn't the smartest place to put it, but she planned to dispose of it more permanently after she got the situation under control.
By this point, both girls were crying hysterically, Aria harder than Spencer. She climbed onto the bed and wrapped her girlfriend up tight in her arms. Aria rocked Spencer back and forth as they hugged, taking on the role as the comforter even though she was so much smaller.
"It's okay, Spence," she mumbled out through her tears. "I'm here, okay?" Aria tried to stay strong for Spencer, but it was so hard.
After a few minutes of crying in each other's arms, Aria looked up at Spencer. "Have you done...that, before?" She asked quietly, scared for her answer. Spencer stayed quiet for a while and wouldn't make eye contact with Aria, so Aria broke down again; she had her answer.
"Please don't cry, Ar," Spencer said quietly, speaking for the first time since Aria got there.
"I can't help it," the smaller girl admitted. "You always seem like the strongest one out of all of us, Spence. I feel like an idiot for not noticing and helping you earlier. I know you better than anyone else." The tears wouldn't stop flowing from her eyes as she spoke. She couldn't help but feel at fault for Spencer's pain. She was her girlfriend; she was supposed to be the one to make her happy all the time and make sure she was okay, and she had completely failed at that job.
Spencer stayed quiet again, apart for her small sobs into Aria's shoulder. "Do you...do you have scars?" Aria asked softly. The only reply was a slight nod. Aria took a deep breath before speaking again. "Show me them." Her girlfriend looked up at her, uncertain of what she should do. "Please," Aria urged.
Without answering Aria, Spencer unwrapped her arms from around her and began to unbutton her shorts slowly. She slipped them down her legs so she was sitting there in only her underwear. There on her thighs were several scars, causing Aria to burst into tears again. She wiped them away as best as she could and sniffled lightly before looking at Spencer and saying, "I want to make you feel better." She moved so that she could lean down and place soft kisses to the scars on her thighs, tears dripping onto the slender legs. The gesture was extremely intimate yet not sensual in the least bit. Aria just wanted to make the love of her life's pain go away. Spencer just watched in awe as she let her tears fall freely. After she had kissed each and every scar on Spencer's thighs, she sat back up and looked at Spencer. "Are there more?" she asked. Spencer shook her head immediately, and Aria could tell that she was being honest.
She took both of Spencer's hands in hers and looked her straight in the eyes. "I know that our lives are a lot worse than a lot of people our age in this seemingly perfect town, but it's going to get better, okay? Screw the people that make our lives hell. Life gets hard, but that doesn't mean you have to inflict this pain on yourself, Spence. The next time you feel like you need to do something like that, think of the good things in your life, and only the good things. Think about you and me together. Think of me telling you how special you are to me, because you are honestly the most important person in my life. I know things are rough, but please, please try your hardest to stay strong, Spencer. For me, but most importantly for yourself. I love you so much, Spencer Jill Hastings."
