Chapter 6

"Kou. Kou."

All the rumbling chaos had stopped-silence. Nothing but that all familiar wind whispered to me. This time, I felt a real presence on my shoulder.

"Open your eyes," she said.

The vivid colours hypnotised me the moment I did. I had never laid my eyes on such a beautiful sight before. I stood atop a mountain peak, staring down into the valley below. It was amazing how much green growth had conquered crude rock. It was as if a rainbow sized cluster had exploded on the mountain. But in the distance was the most indisputable seductive beauty of all. Red petals hung on a seemingly glass stem, swinging gracefully. The alluring scent became more and more irresistible as I got closer.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

I got so caught up in the moment I had forgotten about the voice! The whispers that had been stuck in my mind, devouring my conscious- the woman. I turned, and there she was. A girl wearing a tight red dress. I could see every curve on her body, like a perfect stroke of art. Her rich, long dark hair caressed the base of her silky smooth neck as the wind passed. Her legs, her lips, her hazel eyes ruptured the veins in my body.

"What is this?" I asked- but I had no clue what I wanted to know. About the flower? The dream? Confused, almost delirious I think. Enchanted.

She sent a small surprised giggle to cripple me. I suddenly lost the feeling in my legs. Witchcraft!

"Those are your feelings catching up to you, Kou." She said, "A little different from love, like. This is lust isn't it?" She slowly approached me. Her walk was just as mesmerizing and condemning. I could only swallow. "Mm-hmm, I like that," she smiled.

"Who are you?" I managed to say.

"A girl-" I felt my heart explode when she touched me, "a woman-" she continued as she slipped behind. "A goddess? It's all the same to me." I turned and she was gone.

"I'm just someone looking for that someone who understands me. Looking for someone to haunt, and someone to haunt me day and night. Someone who cares." She reappeared, standing beside the flower. And it was like they were one and the same.

"You didn't answer my question." I said.

"I did," she replied, "You just don't want to listen. Your heart is listening though, otherwise we wouldn't be able to talk here."

"You can't be who I think you are."

"And why not?" She retorted.

"That was just a myth."

"Behind every myth is a forgotten truth Kou. Time erases all, but words shall remain. Whispered around the corner, lost in fables, written or lost in a song."

The mountain moved for a second. Small, subtle quakes that startled me. I had forgotten something. Suddenly I felt my heart sink. Something important. The Vykehn!

"Queen Caryna!" I jumped.

The light suddenly fluttered, and for a second I thought there was nothing but death staring back at me when I looked at her. Only for a second, and her seductive allure was back.

"You are here with me and you are thinking about another woman?" she asked. Her smile was still evident, but I knew better. But if this was a dream, why couldn't I simply wake up?

"I have to go help them, or I'll die with them anyway." I tried to sympathise with her, but she didn't seem to be interested.

"You can't handle such a beast. Not even with your band of misfits." Her smile had been wiped.

"I still have to try."

The rumbling suddenly returned as the landscape began to crumble. I still caught a glimpse of her smile- warm, bewitching, genuine, as chunks of earth were ripped into the heavens. And reality faded in.

...

Chunks of earth were still flying in all directions when I came to however. Rock scattered in all directions as several long tentacles whipped and thrashed violently left to right. Zenah was wielding a large sword, desperately trying to free herself from the tentacles' grip. Karla was backed into a corner in gorguem form, the queen and Song were out of sight.

I tried to move. But any movement I made was in vain, the tentacles had wrapped me tight. Even with all my strength. My lungs labored to breath, but there was nothing more I could, helpless. A white figure suddenly popped up in front- Song, to release me. His efforts only yielded little fruit. But it was all I needed.

An inch of space gave me enough room to wriggle out of the hold as the tentacle snapped. The creature's grip was strong, but the flesh was weak. It withered away after being torn from the rest. I danced around for a second, keeping on my toes to avoid a second strangle hold. When Song's white suddenly vanished, hinting at a direction right before he did. It was a call for help, and I quickly followed. Buried underneath a pile of tentacles, was a shiny bald head- suffocating.

"Song!" I immediately attracted the creature's attention. The tentacles focused on me intently, ready to rip. Karla suddenly burst right through the cyclone to make a clearing. She had just managed fight her way out of the corner. A chance for me to reach into the depths. I only barely escaped with Song, but not without a wicked whip across the face I wouldn't forget soon. The creature's touch at the ends was almost lightning. Stinging.

"Caryna..." Song muttered, breathy.

"Where?!"

"Over here!" Zenah yelled before she was flailed and whipped into the ground.

The queen was being held under what looked like the body of the creature. Finally, I could do more permanent damage. I delve right in. The longer we waited, the greater the risk of finding her dead grew. Black fluid splashed and gashed as I pounded the flesh into the beast. It gave me a few more stings as it wailed and screeched, then retreated. Leaving under it a motionless body- Queen Caryna. Unconscious. Alive?

Yes! I felt the heart beat.

Then the earth suddenly rumbled, violently. A long shadow covered the canyon almost in an instant. The real Vykehn had finally showed up.

"That was just one arm?!" cried Song.

I had never really seen what the creature looked like. No one ever did. All we ever saw were the tentacles dragging men into despair. But there it was. We never saw its head, just the four giant brown tentacles- rugged, hard. Essentially what we had been fighting was the extension of one arm. Like a tongue.

"I warned you, Kou. This foe is unlike any of your modern beasts."

She whispered again- the girl, the goddess. Almost like she was right there, in real life this time. And she was- standing right in front of me.

"You are lucky I was here."

Her apparition was suddenly expelled. As the creature's whole arm lunged at me, I could only protect the queen as the impact came. Straight through the canyon walls, drilled into the underground.
