Chapter 7

Thump!

Rock came crashing down from above. We were buried deep- deeper than we could have ever imagined. Any efforts to dig us back up was useless, hopeless, if not fatal. We were stuck down here. Queen Caryna was still pretty out of it. She was lucky to only have come out with a few broken ribs, broken bones and bruised skin. My left knee was the only real damage I incurred from the fall. But the Vykehn's stinging touch was still hurting.

Suddenly, there was a third presence. In her red dress.

"Why is it that I'm seeing you even in the light of day?" I asked.

"What's wrong? You don't want to see me?" She replied with her own questions. Fussy. Smiling still. Her bare feet made no sound as she floated on the ground.

"Well I'm starting to think you are not entirely good for me."

"Why's that?" she retorted.

"What was going to become of my companions if I stayed with you?" No answer. She just kept looking at me with those eyes. I suspected she wanted to save me, and let the rest perish. "I also get the feeling you could've stopped the Vykehn before we got drilled down here."

"I'm not entirely at liberty to intervene how ever I want, if you must know." Also as I suspected, that last strike was simply a tantrum for my stubbornness. An exhibition of power, control.

"She almost died."

I regretted my words the moment they came out. That hint of darkness in her slipped out for a second again- a hint of vengeance. But it had to be said.

"Why do you seem to care so much? Who is she to you?" She asked.

"She... she is my master." I wished I hadn't just stuttered. She didn't believe me.

"Why do you seem to care for her more than the rest of your masters?"

Just how long had she been monitoring me?

"Her family is the first family that has ever treated me kindly," I said. "But I've already failed her once. I won't fail her again."

Considering any of my previous relations, my bar wasn't particularly high. Any type of failure amounted to punishment. I would be lucky to dine with the pigs in the mud, everyday. Food was a scarce luxury.

"Is that so? So you don't want to snatch her up into your arms and get lost with her?" she teased, "Suddenly your feelings awaken? Pure coincidence?"

"Yes." I denied the thought, plainly. "Plus I don't even know what you are talking about when you keep talking about my feelings awakening. She is simply my master and my queen." Her persistent nagging was starting to scare me though. Perhaps the last strike wasn't aimed at me. Perhaps I was just in the way?

"Kouda?"

Queen Caryna was finally awake.

"What happened?" She moaned as she tried for movement.

"Don't move." The order slipped, "You suffered quite the ordeal." The goddess disappeared almost instantaneously.

"What happened?" She echoed, the pain from her wounds forcing her to subside.

"We got separated from the rest, and got buried beneath the canyon."

"The beast?!" she exclaimed.
