Chapter 1: The New Girl (Teito Klein)

Halfway through the teacher's lesson the door opened. A kid walked in the usual formal military manner and saluted the teacher. "I apologize for my tardiness." They said. All of us sat up a little straighter as the voice was not a boy's but a girl's.

"Ah, I've been expecting you. Everything in order?" He asked. The girl nodded and he smiled. "Class, I would like you to meet Shiroka Illumi." He said.

Shiroka turned to face us and smiled. The entire class was silent for a minute, probably in shock at the fact that it was indeed a girl. She had short black hair and brown eyes. "It's a pleasure to meet you all." She said.

"Why don't you sit next to Teito in the front?" The teacher suggested. I resisted frowning. Shiroka nodded once and quickly slid into the seat next to me. I glanced at her and she smiled sweetly before turning her eyes to the board.

I knew what was being taught so I only half paid attention. As Shiroka was tapping out something on her thighs with her fingers I guessed she knew it too.

It was no surprise when a random arm flung itself around my shoulders. "Go away, Mikage." I said immediately.

"How'd you know it was me?" He asked. I looked at the blond and sighed.

"It's always you." I said. He shrugged with a smile.

"You're a lucky duck, getting to sit next to the new girl." Mikage said. I didn't sat anything as I didn't care. "She's pretty cute." He added. I still said nothing. "Know what I heard?" He continued.

"No." I said flatly.

"Well I heard she's the daughter of a small but very military strong family. Apparently she's the only daughter with three older brothers, all of which got into the academy and graduated with top honors. I heard one is even a Black Hawk." Mikage said, undeterred by my stoic responses.

"That elite of a group?" I asked. Mikage nodded eagerly, obviously glad that I was talking with him.

"Yep. I've also heard she's already got a spot with them and might not even have to take the exit exam." Mikage added.

"She must be good. I wonder how good." I muttered. A commotion in front of us stopped the conversation. There was a ton of people in a crowd, all of them facing a wall. I was to short to see who the unfortunate soul trapped was, but I could safely guess it was Shiroka.

"Poor Shiroka. They're going to crush her." Mikage said since he could actually see over the crowd. I ignored him and wove my way though the crowd easily.

Shiroka had her back to the wall with her hands up as if she were dismissing something. Everyone was shouting things and I could tell by her smile that she was getting overwhelmed. I wove back out. "Is it bad?" Mikage asked.

"Yes. Shall we lend her a hand?" I asked. He nodded and I sent a short blast of Zaiphon across the courtyard. Everyone froze at the explosion and turned around while Mikage and I ran forward.

We both caught one of Shiroka's hands and pulled her out of the crowd. By the time they turned back around we were long gone. We slowed after a little and Mikage and I let her go. She sighed and glanced back before turning to us.

"Thanks." She said.

"Sure." Mikage said brightly. "I'm Mikage and this is Teito." Mikage introduced.

"Shiroka, but call me Shira." She replied.

"So how did you get into the academy? I thought it was boys only." I asked.

Shira laughed nervously. "Well it never says a girl can't come here and my family's well known among the higher ups." She said.

"Is it true you've got one brother in the Black Hawks?" Mikage asked.

"He's only a beglieter but ya." Shira said.

"And another that's in the counsel?" Mikage asked.

"He's just in training to join the military counsel." She corrected. Mikage looked ready to keep on going when she said. "Look, thanks for your help but I've got to run. I have to go to training." Shira bowed then ran off.

"Training, not class." I noticed as I realized what time it was. "Mikage, lets go or we'll be late." I said. He nodded.

"Right. I wonder what training Shira was talking about?" He wondered out loud. I didn't say anything, but I wondered the same thing.

It was late, around 7:00 when I reached the training center. I guessed I would be the only one here, but I was wrong. The sounds of a fight reached me and I headed over to one of the training domes. To my surprise it was Shira.

She finished off the last robot enemy with her bare hands. She wore the no sleeved black turtleneck and black shorts we all wore under our uniform's and her skin was glistening with sweat. "Level 19 and add melee weapons." Shira said.

"Level 19? I've never heard of it." I thought as I approached it. I wanted to see what this 'level 19' looked like as well as how good Shira was.

" 'Level 19' and ' melee weapons' are restricted specifications." A computerized voice that I had never heard before informed her.

"Override." Shira ordered.

"Override code?" The voice asked.

"Black Hawk Beglieter." Shira said.

"Override approved. Level 19 with melee weapons modification will commence at your signal." The computer said. The floor changed, leaving only one small 'safe spot', or an area where the training robots would not go, in the center. Even I couldn't get past having at least three of those spots: level 10 was the highest any normal student could go and I could go to 15.

A ring of white Zaiphon circled around her wrists then extended so it spiraled up to her elbows around two dark silver metal braces. The Zaiphon sunk in and a blade shot out of the metal braces that covering the back of her hand and extended probably six to eight inches past her curled fingers.

"Begin." Shira commanded. I barely even saw the fighting hologram's move before there were six of them on Shira. All of them had swords and somehow Shira dodged every one. She moved fast, possibly even faster than myself, and much like a dancer.

She started by cutting off one's head. I was amazed by how quickly she finished them off. "She's good. No wonder she got in." I thought. A large one appeared, at least three times Shira's height and probably 500 pounds.

Shira looked him once over and ran at him. She ducked under his arms and in less than a minute he vanished. Shira stood still for a minute before deactivating the knives on her arms. She then turned and noticed me. She quickly walked out and deactivated the training machine manually before looking at me. "Did you see that?" She asked.

"You mean the last one? Ya, that was amazing." I admitted. Shira smiled.

"Thanks. But don't tell anyone." Shira said sweetly.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because it's ..." She sighed, her expression flat. "I can just get into serious trouble for it so please don't tell."

"Alright." I agreed.

Shira smiled. "Thanks. Well, I'm off. Night, Teito." She said as she ran off. I stepped up to the computer and started going through all the controls. Not a single one said anything about a voice activated control system.
