Beverly arrived at her office still smiling about her coup over Max. The use of extra time hadn't been planned, just made necessary by tight scheduling and needed to be done if she was to complete Dana's evaluation this week. Nonetheless, it was sweet.
She'd already begun considering possible diagnoses for Dana. It was obvious to Beverly that Dana had a mood disorder, most likely depression. She also likely had dysthymic disorder; another form of depression, usually milder but longer lasting, and often associated with traumatic events from childhood and adolescence.
Dana had also admitted to using marijuana, ecstasy and to huffing spray paint. The way things were going there would likely be others, and alcohol as well.
There was also her tendency to be defiant. Barbie had been eager to offer that Dana often lost her temper, argued with adults, defied authority and refused to do what was asked of her. Beverly had observed a significant exception to this behavior, however, when she was around Bud. Dana was obviously intimidated by him and there needed to be a better understanding of why.
Another concern was the likelihood that Dana could be developing a personality disorder. She'd already shown significant impulsivity with her drug use, self-inflicted injuries, unstable personal relationships and probable sexual exploits. These weren't just isolated reactions, but seemed to reflect a pattern of behavior and inner experience developed over the years. Most concerning, was that this pattern and the occurrence of dysthymic disorder were often associated with abuse histories.
"Your two pm is here, Doctor Anderson. I was surprised they actually showed up!" Sue said sarcastically, bringing Beverly out of her inner world.
"Thank you, Sue. They had to show up, it's a legal issue. There would have been consequences had they not. Go ahead and bring them in, please."
A few minutes later Sue arrived with Dana and Barbie. Mr. Turner, Bud, was conspicuously absent this time.
"Where's Mr. Turner, Barbie?" Beverly hoped he had just gone to the restroom, or was delayed for some reason, as she needed to continue to observe his interaction with Dana. On another level, she had already decided he was dangerously volatile and was relieved not to have to deal with him.
"There was a bunch of trouble at the buns today," Barbie said. "He had to call the cops out right after the noon crowd left. Some of the early afternoon guys got into it. Gina was doin' a lap dance for one of them an' he decided he wanted a little more than he paid for. One of the other guys who thought he had somethin' goin' with Gina got involved an' it was on. George, our security guy, didn't have the muscle to take on both of 'em at the same time an' it got outta hand. Poor Gina ended up missin' some hair down there, but seemed to be OK other than that."
"You didn't have to tell her about the hair, mother! That was gross," Dana said glancing up at Beverly.
"What happened then, Barbie?" Beverly asked.
"Them two fought until the cops got there. They knocked over half the tables an' ended up on the stage scarin' two of the newer girls half to death. We hadn't had time to clean up all the tables from the lunch crowd an' glasses were sittin' all over the place. A bunch got broke, too. I'm just glad one of them didn't pick up some glass an cut the other one up! It's really bad for business when a club has a killin'."
"I can only imagine, Barbie. Something like that would definitely be very bad for business," Beverly said, mentally rolling her eyes in dismay.
"The last time it happened was when the place was still the Wild Horse an someone DID get killed that time. The place was never the same after that! Maybe that's why it was up for sale when Bud an' his backers were lookin' around. He said he got it cheap. At least a good enough deal to weather the lousy business we had for months after that. We even renamed the place to what it is now an' it didn't even help. People still remembered that killin' there and stayed away for a long time."
