Weeks passed and it was already 2016. The embassy has invited VIPs to the annual New Year's dinner. It wasn't really held in the actual New Year's Day but a few days passed it. Mom was the all-around busy woman tonight. She makes sure everything is perfect and top of the class. I typically help her but today she's assigned me to just focus on the friends of mine I invited.
"Mom, are you sure you don't need my help?" I ask her. She looked stressed and needed some rest but she shakes her head and instead, kisses my cheeks. Without even a word, she leaves to check on the food team.
I watch her walk away. I took my phone out since it vibrated. It was a text from Jongin. I've invited all of them but only he confirmed. Mom invited Lee Soo Man and Exo's manager but only the manager could go. He's with Jongin, he had informed me last night.
"We're almost there." I read Jongin's text aloud.
"Want to go with me in welcoming the guests?" Gabe suddenly wraps his arm around my shoulder, already dragging me towards the doors before I can even answer. He knows I wouldn't refuse because we always welcome guests together.
"You look pretty by the way." Gabe whispered.
I feel chills all over my body as he said it. "Oh my. It feels awkward when it comes from you."
He looked at me. I could tell from my peripheral view but I just looked straight. "I know. That's why I said it." He said after a few seconds.
We stood side-by-side outside our doors to welcome the guests.
"Is someone from Exo going?" Gabe whispers. I just nod.
"Is it the one you made out with?" I looked at him wide-eyed and suddenly covered his mouth. He laughs as pushes my hand off of his mouth.
"I will kill you if someone heard that." I tell him but he just laughs louder, making me laugh at his laugh.
Someone suddenly cleared his throat. We both look at the person and saw it was Jongin.
"Hey." I said as I straighten my dress up.
"Annyeonghaseyo." He politely says to both me and Gabe. Jongin and I have been closer since I started working with them. We just enjoy each other's company. He makes me laugh and I believe I make him laugh too. He's also my ultimate confidante while at work and though he hasn't shared a lot about his personal life like I share to him, it's okay.
"I came to have fun with you but it seems like you're already having fun." He looks at me then at Gabe. I stare at him, suddenly annoyed at what he said.
"Yeah. Thanks for coming." I smile. "This weirdo just said something funny so we couldn't help but laugh." Gabe chuckles again in a minimal volume.
"Weirdo?" Jongin said. "I thought I was the only one you called weirdo." He added with a stern tone.
"Well, it's an expression." I said annoyed. "Get over it." I roll my eyes.
"Jongin?" We all looked at who called him. It was my mom, always in the perfect timing. One more minute with him like that and I would've sent myself to my room.
"Eomoni." Jongin walked towards her and hugged her.
Gabe leaned in and asked, "They're that close?"
"Mom seems to like him so much. I don't get it too." I answer. They were already engrossed in a conversation. They don't get each other much because of language barriers but they seem to be having a nice talk.
I look at Exo's manager who just seemed to watch everything happened from behind Jongin. "Please come in. Dinner starts at 7." He bows and then walks inside the embassy.
When it was time for dinner, we sat at our designated seats. Dad led everything. For us and most of the people that came except for the first timers to be invited, this was already a routine. We'd go to their events and they'd go to ours. That's how it always was.
When the dinner was done, they went to the living room for some talks and coffee. I got a bottle of white wine, wine glass, and some chips from the pantry. I was planning on just going back to my room and have a little drink for myself. I was itching to continue to play call of duty too so I wanted this night to finish.
Jongin walked towards me. I was going to avoid him but why should I?
"Eilee." He called. I just looked at him. "Can we talk in private?" He asked.
"I'm going to my room. You can come if you like." I started walking and he followed.
When we arrived to my room, I set myself on the couch and Jongin closed the door. I was pouring wine to the glass as he sat beside me. "Oh shit. No wine glass for you." I said aloud.
"Mianhae." He spoke. "Oh no, it's not your fault. Let's just share." I said as I handed him the glass. He finishes it in an instant.
He handed me the glass. I started pouring in wine for myself. "I wasn't sorry for the glass." He said. I just drank in an instant too. I like the taste of white wine but red wine, I hate it.
"I'm sorry about earlier with Gabe." He continued. I was just listening. I stood up and started to set my game console so I could start playing call of duty. "I hope you can forgive me." He added. I just nod.
I sat back on the couch and handed him the other controller. "Did you even understand what I said?" He kept talking. "Yeah." I said. The game started and we played. We were enemies on the game and so we started hunting each other.
"Well... Do you forgive me?" He asks. Suddenly, my character died saying it was killed by the enemy. "Ah, fuck. I want a rematch." I said, keeping my eyes on the screen. Just then, Jongin walked towards the console and switched it off.
I didn't want to snap out. So I calmly asked him to put it back on. "Jongin... If you're really sorry about it, you'll leave and let me play peacefully."
"Eilee... Let's talk please." He pleaded.
"I just don't get it. I thought everything was okay between us. We're so close at work and then suddenly tonight you come up to me talking like a complete asshole. I don't get it. I really don't." I tell him honestly. I mean, I don't even know why he lashed out like that and I'm supposed to just be okay with it? I don't think that's right.
"I'm really sorry about tonight. It was just... me being me. I'm really sorry." I stood up and walked towards my room door and opened it wide.
"Well... this is just me being me too. Get out of my room and leave." I tell him.
He walked towards me and pushed the door close, also closing the distance between us. "Come on, Eilee. I'm really sorry. Your tall, handsome, amazingly talented friend is begging for your forgiveness." He smirked and I roll me eyes. He laughs and pulls me in for a hug.
"Now hug me too and let me beat you again in your game." He says. I wrapped my arms around him and he tightened his arms around me. "Hey. I let you win a while ago to not scar your ego." I replied.
He laughed. "Race to 10" He suggested.
"Aren't you going home with your manager?" I ask.
"Nah. I told him to leave if I wasn't back to see him after 5 minutes." I looked at him confused. "Well, I'm here so let's play." We let go of each other and went to the couch.
"I bet I could beat you even when I'm lying down." He proudly stated but before I could say anything, he started lying down and placing his head on my lap. He started the game and so we played. We ended up playing more than 10 games but I lost count because I suddenly dozed off.
