Layla and Ever had woken up much earlier the next day. They both got dressed and put on make up, and met in the cafeteria with their bags. The girls took advantage of the waffle line, then took a trip to Starbucks, which Ever quoted as being something "every white girl needs".
Ever and Layla glanced around the courtyard, not used to seeing so many people rushing by. Ever turned to Layla. "What time is it?"
Layla blinked. She leaned over Ever, getting way too close to Ever's phone in an attempt to exaggerate her point. She stood back up, mentally claiming victory when she saw Ever's red cheeks. "9:23."
"We should head to class." Layla nodded. Neither girl moved. "Where is class again?" Ever asked.
Layla looked at her friend, and the two sat in silence. Layla sighed loudly. "Always gotta do the dirty work around here." Layla pulled out her map and glanced from it, to the courtyard.
Layla started walking down the sidewalk, continuously looking down at her map to see if she was headed the correct way. Ever followed behind, staring down at her phone.
Unfortunately, Ever didn't have the greatest eyesight. Staring down at a bright screen didn't help. Another man was walking towards the girls, his attention stuck on his phone as well. The two crashed into each other, falling to the ground and dropping their phones. The man quickly fumbled to stand up, surprised by the face that had been inches from his.
A thud sounded from behind Layla, but she didn't process the sound or what it meant for a few seconds. She turned around, pausing from her search to look up at where her friend lay, and a familiar figure stood above her. As she prepared herself to rush over and make sure her friend was okay, Phil walked by and grabbed Layla's arm, leading her away whilst he explained the situation. His friend could take care of himself.
Ever placed a hand on the back of her head, rubbing it in a lame attempt to stop the pain. "Sorry. I wasn't paying attention. My friend refuses to answer his phone," a low voice sounded. Ever looked up, and wondered if she had hit her head harder than she thought.
The man; tall, brown hair similar to Phil's, deep brown eyes; held out a hand for her, repeating his apology until he was out of breath. Ever accepted the hand and he pulled her up. Ever looked down at the two phones that lay screen-down on the concrete, trying to make sense of what had happened.
The buzzing in her ears went away, and her daydream vanished. She realized the man was talking to her.
"Are you alright? Are you hurt? You look like you might be injured. I mean, it wasn't that hard of a fall, but I did run into you-god, I'm sorry. Uh, hello? Can you hear? Oh gosh. Oh, I am so sorry-"
"I'm fine," Ever assured, snapping herself out of her daze. The man nodded quickly, and bent down, picking up the phones. He sucked in a breath, slowly handing her the now cracked phone. "Sorry about that...I can buy you a new one...maybe," he said slowly, rubbing the back of his neck.
Ever took the phone and shoved it into her back pocket. She was too surprised to be mad. The man stared at her for a moment before holding out a hand. "Dan," he spoke hesitantly, the faintest smile appearing on his lips.
Ever smiled at him, allowing him to relax. She grabbed his hand and shook it, replying, "Ever." She didn't want to admit that she had seen every one of his videos, and absolutely adored the man. Just like he didn't want to admit that he'd been watching her videos since she started, and absolutely adored the woman. That would just be weird.
Dan's smile vanished when he saw what he had done to her arm. "I am-I am so so sorry!" he repeated.
Ever attempted to shrug it off, but a pain in her head caused her to falter. She winced, placing her hand on the back of her head. "What? What's wrong?" Dan panicked.
