Layla moved her hangers, looking at each shirt before passing on to the next. Ever groaned, throwing her legs over the open part of the chair and standing up. "You're taking forever! This is a dance, not your wedding day!" Ever walked up to the closet, looking in at her friend.
Layla sighed, her arms slumping down to her sides. She slowly turned around, giving her friend an annoyed look. "Well, sorry. What are you doing here, anyway? Do you not have a date?'
Ever laughed, and Layla paused in her search and turned slowly to look at her friend. "Are you serious?"
Layla blinked, unsure how to go about this. "Oh, I get it. You wanted to ask me!" Layla put a hand over her heart, her act coming into play. "Well. Go ahead."
Ever rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure. Keep thinking that."
Layla exaggerated a gasp, trying to sound offended. "Alright, fine. What about Dan?"
Ever turned away to hide her blush, and slowly made her way back to the chair. "Please. I've known the guy for 5 days," she sat on the arm of the chair and let her body fall into the seat.
"You mean 3 years," Layla teased, jumping in surprise when a pillow came flying toward her face. "Hey, watch it! I got my hair all pretty for you, and this is how you repay me?"
"You're not my date," Ever corrected
"Going stag, then?" Layla's question was met with silence. She looked back at her friend, who was staring at her as if she were an alien. "What? Stag not the thing anymore?"
"Maybe if you're a 15 year old boy from the 90s."
Layla paused. "Okay. Not a thing anymore. Flying solo? Sticking to your independence-"
"Dear god, you sound like a dad trying to be cool. Please, just stop," Ever begged.
"You obviously don't remember my dad, then, if this surprises you," That statement was met with a laugh, and Layla smiled, glad she'd gotten something. "Okay. I got it," Layla grabbed a shirt and rushed to the bathroom with it, not allowing Ever to see. Ever rolled her eyes and waited patiently for her friend to make another grand entrance. "Tada! What do you think?" Layla hopped out of the restroom, hands above her head, and did a little dance to match her entrance.
"Looks great. Can we go now?"
"You didn't even look...," Layla frowned. "You try to dress up for a girl, and this is what you're met with!"
Ever rolled her eyes, and the two made their way down the stairs and out to the courtyard. "So, what is this supposed to be?" Layla started, looking around. "I mean, is it a school dance or a youtube party or...," she trailed off.
Ever shrugged. "Bit of both, I guess? There are high schoolers at this University as well."
"Probably trying to keep things natural. Hip-"
Ever shook her head. "No," she demanded. "Stop."
Layla pouted, but said nothing. The duo walked down the corridor, examining the fairy lights hanging in the trees, shining bright against the dark blue sky.
Their walk ended at the doors of the gymnasium, where they had been just two days before. "Back again ," Layla stated, opening the door for Ever.
The gymnasium was full of people. As Layla and Ever looked around the crowd, they weren't too sure how they felt about this whole idea. The girls made their way through the gym, looking for someone they recognized.
Phil was leaning against the wall, his hands resting in his pockets. As his gaze swept across the crowd, he caught sight of a familiar auburn - brown hair. "Layla!" he called, moving to where the girls stood.
