It didn't even feel like I was in the room anymore, the longer I held his gaze the further away I seemed to be. The voices around me were just echoes. He was all I could focus on.
Then he looked away.
The eye contact I didn't know I wanted lasted a mere few seconds. It was slightly disappointing to say the least, and I cast my eyes down to the ground. Why was it bothering me? A stupid guy who was nothing but a cocky stoner at the best of times. I downed what was left of my drink and looked around for Ella. She was by the wall, talking to her boyfriend Danny.
She caught my eye and waved me over.
"You do realise you've been staring at Hemmings for a good 10 minutes right?" Danny said with a small smirk.
I rolled my eyes, "Yes Daniel, I was aware of my own actions thank you."
"Great, cause he's staring at you now."
I turned, and sure enough his eyes were on me. A small smile spread from around his cigarette. I smiled back, playing with the end of my hair. I'd never had a problem with confidence, and I'd had my fair share of boyfriends. Unlike Luke however, I didn't stay with them for a short while them leave them once I got bored.
Ella shook her head, "Okay, let's stop this now. Cut the doe eyes and look at me." Reluctantly I broke our eye contact once more and turned to face her. "You do not need that."
I sighed, because she was right - as much as I hated to admit it. But life isn't always about what you need. I didn't need a boyfriend, I didn't need a brand new phone. But I wanted them, so I went out and got them; and I wanted this.
"Harley."
Ignoring her, I turned back and collided with someone.
"Careful harlequin." Even though the words dripped from his mouth like honey, coated by his thick Australian accent, I found myself rolling my eyes again.
"That's not my name, Bruce."
I saw a glint of humour in his eyes, as he shook his head.
"We both know that you are completely aware of my real name doll."
"For all the wrong reasons, and I thought you would be completely aware of mine since you were watching me so closely that you might as well have joined our conversation."
His eyes scanned me and I folded my arms, rocking back on my heels.
The other girls were a stark contrast to me and Ella. Whilst at least 70% of them had blonde to light brown hair, mine was almost black. Whilst they wore the typical adidas jackets and a pair of Nike airforce (which I was also guilty of owning), I wore a simple loose black vest and black jeans. Granted, I hadn't got changed after my shopping trip earlier, so my wedge heeled boots and curly hair made me look slightly over dressed.
Ella was wearing a simple white crop top with blue jeans and converse, her medium brown hair pulled into a half ponytail.
This wasn't our usual crowd at all, the people around us were regular smokers and drinkers. We attended parties, but smoking or drinking till we couldn't walk had never appealed to us. The quality of boys in here wasn't of the highest standard either, most of them being the type that spit on the pavement and slap girls arses as they walk by.
Then there were the slightly upper variety, like Danny, who had more respect for women and just needed to be taught a few more manners.
Luke and his friends were also in that group. They weren't the type that would touch girls without consent, but they weren't always the most respectful towards them. They certainly had better dress sense, and were more the type of guys I was attracted to.
"First time I've seen you here." He spoke after a minute or so of silence.
"Yeahh...this isn't my usual idea of fun."
He raised an eyebrow slightly,
"So what is?""Netflix, the movies, shopping."
"I could help you out with all 3."
The smirk on his face just screamed 'I'm a fuckboy'.
"You could." Was my simple response, before I turned away from him for the final time and waved to Ella and Danny.
"I'll be in the car."
And with that, I left. On my way out of the door I heard Luke's voice filled with curiosity.
"Who is that?"
"Harley."
I smirked to myself and let the door swing shut behind me. I knew acting like every other girl he'd been with would successfully get him in my bed, but then would get me kicked to the curb within a week. I wanted more than that.
Now he knew who I was, and I was far more memorable than the other girls that had been hanging off his arm all night.
The tables had turned. He didn't have me, I had him.
