Keep Driving

Keep Driving

we sit in silence

burning gasoline

staring out the window

on a city street

and we keep driving

no one says a thing

but no one really has to

because quiet is comforting

when I sit by you

and we keep driving

we head for a destination

miles and miles ahead

I see the traffic lights

and they are almost always red

and we keep driving

although people say

it's about the journey

i don't think I believe them

because our final destination

is where we wish to be

and we keep driving

we reach a railroad crossing

twenty miles later

and I hear the whistle of a train

sound its deafening blare

and we keep driving

you don't turn on the radio

and that I am grateful for

because if I hear the radio static

it will break the quiet

and I'll just long for silence more

and we keep driving

I saw a vehicle crash

a couple highways back

and I learn later

the driver died on impact

but he lived the best life he'd ever had

and we keep driving

after many left hand turns

and red stop signs

we finally reach our destination

and pull the car inside

although i wish it wasn't so long

the journey itself was worth it

because we finally made it home

to where we belong

all because we did it

we kept driving
