"I'm sorry that I haven't talked to you," she started. He turned to her fully, closing the leather notebook with a soft slap. She nervously scratched the back of her neck, not able to meet his eyes. "You see, I figured that you were right, that night that you told me that I deserved to be free. So I broke up with him that night and went home." She blushed, covering her face with her hand out of embarrassment.
"And do you know what I did? I cried. I cried for so long that I almost couldn't breathe, and I finally decided that I had to learn to be happy. But I wanted to be happy on my own." She finally looked up at him, meeting his eyes. "I had to, you see. And I did. I'm happy now, and I did it all on my own. So now I know that I don't need anyone else to be happy...but I-I couldn't really forget about you."
Throughout the entire speech, he was silent, looking at her with a mixture of admiration and surprise.
"I...I'm glad. That you're happy. And I understand." He smiled at her, running his fingers along the edges of his notebook. She smiled, letting out a relieved laugh.
"Thank you...I-I just...you're in a band!" She said, as if she suddenly remembered. He chuckled, nodding.
"Yeah, I don't know if you listen to it or-"
"Are you kidding? I've been to every show you've done! You're downright amazing!" She said, playing with the tips of her hair. He felt the familiar urge from deep in his gut to kiss her. He still held back.
"So could we be friends again?" He asked, even though he wanted to be so much more. She smiled, glancing up at him.
"I never stopped being your friend. But now we can hang out and stuff, yes. Now that I've gotten all of the bullshit out of my life," she said with a grin.
"Okay good. 'Cause you can never do that again, got it?" He pretended to be stern, earning a giggle from her as she folded her short legs underneath her.
"I won't, promise. I like you too much. You know, those months were hell without you. I thought I was going to go crazy."
He chucked and threw an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. He earned a giggle from her as she looked up at him with her gorgeous eyes. With his free hand, he ruffled her hair and looked out over the park. "I didn't doubt you for a second, chickadee."
