Half-blood Hill

There! It was in my sights, the place that I had been running for so long to get to. A small mound of dirt with a lone pine tree. It seemed so close, so tangible, but the monsters behind me proved otherwise. I felt as if I was cursed by Hades, who had summoned all his worst creatures from tartarus to torment me; all three kindly ones, numerous hell-hounds and the Chimera. After all, what had I ever done to him?

They were swiftly catching up, but I was finally on the hill, all I had to do was cross the tree .  .  . BAM. A hell-hound knocked into me, getting rid of any breath I had left and pushing me down the hill. There was nothing I could do but press on my necklace which quickly transformed into my beautiful sword, Perseis, or the destroyer. I was worried that that may be one of the last things that I did, but pushed that thought away and struck the hell-hound down, feeling myself go into battle mode. Anger replaced my fear and new-found energy burned in my limbs and veins like liquid adrenaline. I dodged blows from the kindly ones with ease, parrying, then striking with deadly force. But they kept on pushing, and I could not hold all the beasts off on my own - there were enough to keep an army busy.

Then the Chimera charged. Every breath I took seemed to be infused with terror. I couldn't jump sideways, as I was engaged in fighting a hell-hound that was giving me rather nasty bites. Instead I sprung straight up, leaping from the hell-hound's head, and jumping onto the Chimera's back. I barely had time to figure out how I did that when I remembered that the Chimera had a serpent for a tail; and boy, was it not happy. I ended up hanging on for dear life as it staggered around, trying to shake me off; the serpent tail hissing curses at me. I felt like a rodeo rider trying to ride a deranged bull. Meanwhile, kindly ones and hell-hounds tried to nip at me, thrashing ferociously. It was all I could do to try to evade them. The smell of unclean zoos burned in my nostrils. I swore to myself that if I ever got out of this alive, I'd never go to any sort of animal enclosure again.

The Chimera finally gained the upper hand, roared then flung me through the air. I landed flat on my back in the long grass. My head had smacked against a rock when I fell and when I sat up, my vision was blurry, and my head felt like it was splitting open. All I knew was that I was still holding Perseis.

The monster charged.

Instinctively, I rolled to one side and came up kneeling. As it barreled towards me, I drove my sword into its open mouth, right up through the roof, tearing flesh and bone. The Chimera roared in agony, and began to disintegrate like crumbling sand, blown away in chunks by the wind. Some however, lingered, almost absorbed into my sword. It quivered slightly, emitting a soft tremble, then was still, shiner and stronger than ever.

The monster was gone, but others still remained.

I really didn't have the strength to fight anymore, and I was tired of running. So I closed my eyes and sat there, waiting for death. It didn't come, but I heard the sound of swords clashing and someone calling my name in plain disbelief. The voice seemed familiar and reminded me of warmth, but I couldn't place it. That was until I opened my eyes and saw Luke's face staring at me. All over the hill, kids dressed in full Greek battle armour over their pyjamas, and heavily armed with celestial bronze weapons were fighting the monsters. It was almost funny to see some kids running around in their leopard-print shorts, brandishing a long spear. Someone had probably seen all the beasts and raised the alarm, although the sound of them alone would probably be enough to wake the dead. I felt as though I should go and help them fight, to thank them for saving my life. But I was exhausted and felt as if I could sleep forever; I had trouble keeping my eyes open. Somewhere in the back of my brain, a voice told me I probably had a concussion, but I was tired and my eyes kept closing.

I remember was collapsing, then Luke picking me up and saying, "Anya. Antheia. Open your eyes." I'd never heard his voice so strained, so frantic. "Don't go to sleep on me. Not yet."

But I started to drift off, lost in the blackness of my mind that seemed so tempting and peaceful.
