Chapter fourThe Cats Back Bridge

                                                                    ~ * ^ * ~

The end bell rang and the Thursday end of school rush flooded through the corridors of M.C. State Academy. On the walk home Jamie diverted her normal route to the Japanese gardens; she was in no rush to get back and anyway, she needed time to think over the day's events.

The beautiful scents of the gardens flowers filled her nose. She sighed and took in a deep breath closing her eyes to take in the wonderful aromas all mingled together. Her hard soled boots clomped along the Cats Back Bridge that flowed over the small man-made stream. She stopped in the middle of the bridge which moaned quietly with every shift of her weight that just reminded her even more about her body and appalling appearance. She didn't dare look into the water, scared of the reflection that would protrude back at her angrily.

She couldn't help but think back to that boy at lunch, it befuddled her why he would come talk to her so openly without anyone coming over and showing him the ropes. It was downright weird and it scared her a little, she was used to what she got but this... attention? No, not in that kind of way. But she refused to let her hopes up that he would talk to her again, someone would have told him as soon as he was out of sight.

She found that the quiet time wasn't helping her, she needed distraction the brooding just made her more depressed and so she slipped out the red leathered book she had read a few days beforehand. Moving off the bridge to a more comfortable spot on the bank of the stream, she awkwardly plopped down on the tough grass and opened the old book on her lap.

The garden was pleasant with old fashioned flowers,

Sunflowers and Hollyhocks stood up like towers.

There were dark-turn-capped Lilies and Jasmine rare,

Sweet Thyme and Marjoram scented the air.

The moon made the sundial tell the time wrong,

'twas too late in the year for the nightingale's song.

The Box trees were clipped, the alleyways straight,

'til you came to the shrubbery, hard by the gate.

The Fairies stepped out of the Lavender beds,

With mob-caps or wigs on their quaint little heads.

My Lord had a sword, My Lady a fan,

The music struck up and the dancing began.

I watched them go through with a grave minuet,

Wherever they footed, the dew was not wet.

They bowed and they curtsied, the bold and the fair,

And laughter, like chirping of crickets was there.

Then, all of a sudden, the church clock struck loud.

A flutter, a shiver was seen in the crowd.

The cock crew, the wind woke, the trees tossed their heads,

And the Fairy-folk hid in the Lavender beds.

She sighed sadly and stopped reading the leathered poem book; she wasn't taking any of it in. She packed it away and started the tiring journey home.
